This could be any number of things -- could be a result of an autoimmune disorder, immuno deficiency, or even something like mumps.

A diabetic is at a far greater risk for contracting a large variety of diseases -- you should check with a doctor immediately. Until then, try taking a few aspirin, and keep the area cool with a compress.

sjorgen's--- auto immune in the class of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc. its when the immune system attacks the salivary glands. Dry mouth, dry eyes, painful throbbing salivary glands which are located in the back of the ears on the neck.
