During general anesthesia patients will cease to breathe on their on so therefore they are intubated and placed on a ventilator to do the work for them. An endotrachial tube is placed through the larynx (voice box) and into the trachea. It is because it goes through the voice box that you are unable to talk as well. Allowing the voice to rest for a few days should do the trick.

if they put you to sleep for the surgery then they put a breathing tube down your throat which can make it hard for some people to talk after the operation. after a day or two your voice will start to come back.
