As far as the smell, it has a light, caramel-like aroma.
According to the Eagle Brand Condensed Milk website, condensed milk (sweetened or otherwise) has a 24 month shelf life after the production date. If you have this brand of product, you can enter the production code from the can into their website and it will tell you the date of production.

It shouldn't really have a strong or bad smell. When it's been in the can a long time it will be thick and an orangeish colour but it's still good. It can last in the can for many years and unless the can is rusted it should be fine. If it has a smell-throw it out. Do not take chances. I have been using condensed milk everyday of my life for over twentyfive years. So take it from me. It should not smell strong-just a very mild sweet milk fragrance. If it does stink it was not vaccum sealed. If you keep it in the fridge it will last -opened for a few weeks at least and on the counter it will last a few days unless your house is very hot and you have no airconditioning in which case look at it and smell it and if in doubt-throw it out. I have never seen any brand of condensed milk from any country have an expiry date. It usually has a PRODUCT CODE stamped on it. If you call the company's customer service line they will ask you for this code and tell you when it was made. But I think you should go with your gut instincts and throw it out-it's not worth getting sick over.

Sweetened condensed milk from cans is the same as the variety in tubes. It has a sickly sweet smell. Due to the high sugar content, it takes years to go bad. If it has a best before date, i recommend using it no more than a year after that

It smells sweet......
Condensed milk usually does have an expiration date, so check the can label closely. It should always be refrigerated after opening.
Due to its high sugar content, condensed milk will last longer, but use optimally within five to seven days after opening.

well it smells like milk but only sweeter. yes it can go bad because milk is already a great culture for bacteria, adding sugar only heightens its ability.

No it does not go bad as long as it is not opened. It smells sweet, almost like caramel.
