Well sweet heart, I can not say if you were mistreated or not. But I can say that all that was done to you was for the protection of both the officer (s) as well as your self. You worry about a little hurt in chains and cuffs. Seems like you didn't worry about who you could have hurt or killed and along with that, their families. That is a serious charge and I don't feel sorry for you. To many, way to many people are being killed by drunk drivers. I am personally glad they got you off the road and I hope this proves to be a valuable lesson to you.

You should be in a bad spot with the law! You were in the wrong big time. Thank God the police stopped you before you ended the life of someone by hitting them. Yes, stop your whining and accept the fact that you were in the wrong. Any punishment given to you I hope will make you think before you do this again. As for you being disrespected by the police and wondering if you should file a complaint, don't embarrass yourself any further. It must be the alcohol talking. Get some rest!

That kind of action does happen. The handcuffs you described work like the tie you use on a baggie. The police can legally use what restraint they see is neccessary to protect themselves from someone who is acting in a manner that would cause them or the arrested person/suspect harm. Claiming police brutality won''t help your case especially when it involves a DWI. Driving intoxicated is a criminal act (ranging from misdemeanor to a felony) as you were impaired and put and the lives of others in danger. The police see the result of intoxicated drivers everyday and it could be anything from a fender bender to the death of a child. You were lucky to have been just pulled over instead of being involved in much worse.

first of all you were breaking the law ie CRIMINAL- they pulled you over for suspicions that turned out to be accurate- you were driving while intoxicated- the possibilities are endless to what COULD have happened- you could have killed somebodyor their child- or mother or lover- YOU and YOU alone could have changed so many peoples lives in an instant and you were too selfish to stop and think about that- i can't sit here and pretend I have not been that insanely stupid and selfish before either so please don't feel as if I am attacking you- my realization was that my grandfather was killed by a drunk driver who was 6 months pregnant and she drove away- nothing happened to her law wise- but the fact that she has to live with the fact she killed somebody with every breath she takes is probably complete agony- i only hope that you can learn from this and call a friend next time- as far as them using "non-standard" cuffs- not likely they don't have anything on them that is not issued by the force- about the cuffs being too tight- that happens to everybody- no case there- unless you have bruises and pictures to prove they used excessive force---- good luck i hope everything works out for the best-- get a good lawyer to get it off you record- that will set you back a good $1500-$2000- stay safe--Peace

The laws as they are now are very unsympathetic towards drunk drivers. Given that, there probably isn't a lot you can do regarding any mistreatment. Cuffing you was totally expected, even required most places, even for much more minor offenses. The leg chains are a little unusual, though. If they denied you a breathalizer, you might have something. If you were the picture of compliance the whole time, you might have something. I'd get a decent lawyer- do whatever you can to get one yourself. They'll have better advice with regard to the laws as they are in your state than anyone here.

The cuffs you are talking about look/and are like those plastic ties. They use them now a lot of times instead of regular chained cuffs. If the police felt any reason to restrain your legs too then they had every right to do it. However... it could be a law in your State that they have to restrain you completely. It does not seem like you have any recorse against the Police...
Why were you embarrassed? You drove drunk... you are lucky that embarrassed is all you are...

You are a common criminal. You were drinking and driving, that is against the law. What if you had hit another car or a pedestrian? What if you had injured or killed someone. Have you ever worked in law enforcement or in the EMS field? Have you ever had to tell someone there loved one is dead. Before you go getting all ugly with the police because you were handcuffed for a crime you committed, maybe you ought to think about the crime and the consequences of your actions. Be lucky you were only handcuffed and that no one died!

Pain in your wrists is nothing compared to the pain of lifelong rehabilitation in learning to walk again after severe spinal injuries. Every day is agony and pain and disappointment with little progress and merit. It won't pass after a couple of wrist flexes and a hot pack. And it mightn't have been you receiving it; it couldn't have been the other driver or even their child receiving these debilitating inuries. Think about that next time you step behind the wheel of your car drunk.
FYI you must have been pretty damn intoxicated for them to chain up your legs AND wrists... Grow up and learn some responsiility. Roads would be a lot safer for the rest of us if people like you learned to obey the law.

They do make handcuffs that don't have chains; they are quite common. How drunk were you, do you remember how everything happened? Were you getting combative or argumentative with the cops? Were you giving them a hard time? They have a right to restrain you as securely as they need to, to assure their safety, as well as yours. Cuffs are made to keep you tightly restrained...what good would they be to the police if they didn't serve their purpose? And, as you now know, metal cuffs are not meant to be comfortable!

Quit whining about how the cops treated you. It sounds like you are trying to minimize the crime you commited by pointing out something they did. Grow up! You shouldn't drink & drive anyway. Innocent people (incl. you & your friends) could have been harmed or killed. Let the pain of the cuffs remind you of the pain that can occur if you'd gotten into a wreck. Luckily for you it goes away. Unfortunately the stain to your driving record that a DWI leaves won't.
