Yep! But, they don't all get it and aren't born with it obviously. You can pay to have one implanted in your pet.

There ARE microchips available for implant in animals and birds; they are not like LOJAC. the only time a chip is used is when an animal is brought to a place where someone has a chip READER. if your chipped animal is lost, there is a slim chance that someone will bother to take it somewhere to see if there is a chip in it. These chips that they are implanting in animals is a very contraversial thing.
Animals who are chipped are in a world-wide data base; a chipped animal is linked to YOUR information, where you live, and other ways of locating you. Its good if your pet excapes, but real bad if some kind of "reason " for locating you because some other reason makes the "authorities" want to find the dog... for example:
About four years or so ago, a potentially deadly disease was discovered in california. It was called "EXOTIC NEWCASTLES DISEASE". Because there millions of chickens in huge meat producing plants there, and the huge profits from same- pressure was put upon the Government of California to kill and utterly destroy any bird that MIGHT have possibly been in contact with a suspected infected bird. - Migrating birds drop as they fly... sick birds drop over large populations of "tame" birds in outdoor areas, like barnyards, back yards... You get the picture.
Because of the fear of this spreading, the State of California and a couple of other adjoining states enacted an emergency proceedure that gave the police and other wildlife and similar agencies a mandate, (order) to go into any place that had birds of any kind and kill them on the spot.
This REALLY HAPPENED. Now that so many animals are implanted with these devices; and in a data base, where all one need to do to locate any 'threat" of infection or WHATEVER THEY THINK MIGHT BE A PROBLEM".... They know where you live. they are then able to include your pet in an emergency and believe me, they WILL be able to take or kill your pet on the spot.
With bird flu getting ever nearer and nearer to this country; and the fact that dogs and cats are also able to contract this disease, AND THE FACT that there are already plans drawn up to ISOLATE entire cities to prevent the spread of this disease.... all microchipped animals are in danger of a panic spread insanity that will possilby lead the authorities right to your pet. You will not have a choice to "contain' your pet; they killed pet parrots right in front of little kids, old ladies, and entire families. They knocked down doors and arrested anyone who fought them.
YES THIS DID HAPPEN!
Putting a microchip into your pet is NOT A GOOD IDEA. Unless you are a slacker who lets your pet out to wander around and get itself into trouble, do NOT comply with this new demand of the Government to microchip your pets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good post Ginger!
When/if chipping becomes mandatory the government (and the ARs) will know all about you.
Over your dog limit?
Had a litter of puppies?
Dogs not spayed/neutered in compliance with mandatory S/N laws?
Do not give all the shots (like bordatella or Lymes) THEY think you should?
You could have AC at your dog to seize YOUR dogs!
BTW - GPS and microchips are two different things

Considering that a "chip" like that would be the size of a cell phone, I'd have to say no.
