Sure I like the Police and will trust them with my life. They work hard at times and are dedicated men and women. But as in any profession, even Priesthood you have always got bad apples. They make everyone look bad. Eventually they will get caught and then they are out of there.Sometimes it takes a little longer but it will happen. Sounds like you had a bad experience with them even though you didn't say so.If you have a job, I am sure you try to do your best. Well the Police are doing the same thing.Ever think where you might be with out them. You could be dead. Give them a chance and you will be amazed at what they are willing to do for you and your family.

I'm SO glad you asked!

In my opinion, the police have evolved (see, I'm not implying evil intent) into nothing more than a revenue generating operatus run by the judicial branch of whatever level of government the police force serves (barring the Federal level police organizations, which have become mercenary forces).

The last 5-10 encounters I've had with police have involved me paying money to the city, county, etc. I cannot recall the last time and officer of ANY department has actually assisted me in any way. I was a military police officer and enjoyed it to some extent, but I would NEVER become a civilian cop because I am not a salesman. I cannot and will not be the government's collection agent.

Now, granted there are people out there who receive police assistance and will be diametrically opposed to what I am saying. But the fact is that by sheer numbers, more civilians interact with police on a payee level than they do on a rescuee level.

Both realities exist. Those who have been helped love police. Those who have not been helped but have been forced to help (in the form of paying fines to the city/county/etc) do not. It's sort of a paradigm I guess. But it's no enigma. Something can and should be done.

Yes, I like the idea of someone that is here to keep some order in a city that would be overun with crime if it were not policed. The idea of trusting a police officer has to be there in order for a policed area to work. I believe the academy screens out the dishonest people to a degree, but because there are a few that slip through or are tempted into dishonesty after they become officers, does not rule out the fact that you have to trust the police as a whole for it to work.

The police have a job that regularly puts in confrontation with some of the worst dregs of society. If a majority of the non-law enforcement people you meet are criminals, you tend to get jaded and started expecting that a majority of all people are criminals. You are constantly on guard, you never know when the kid you pulled over for rolling a stop sign has just finished a week long Doom session and figures pulling the trigger is a quick way to get out of trouble. It's not a job I would want. But I'm glad there are men and women that are willing to do the job and try to keep me safe enough to sleep at night. Do I like them, damned right! Do I trust them? As long as I am not breaking the law, sure. If I am pulled over for a traffic violation or something, I will keep my hands where they can see them, treat them with respect, be polite. You gotta figure, as they approach your car, they have left the 'safety' of their world and are approaching yours. If you make them feel safe, you'll find they are much nicer. I have been pulled over for speeding 3 times, once for expired tags in the last 3 years. I was doing 75 in a 65 with the expired tags. Using my methods I only got a fix it ticket for the tags and never a speeding ticket.

I think Police are just like everyone else. That is, there are good ones and there are asses.

One morning, I was on my way to school, hit a weird curve, and blew a tire. It was probably about 30 degrees, and since I am normally only outside for the duration it takes me to get from my car, to the building, I didn't have a coat. I also came to the realization that I didn't have a spare tire (idiotic step-dad took it out), so I called my mom to come get me. I was right next to the police department (you can actually see it from where I was), and about 16 patrol cars passed me while I was waiting there shivering my butt off. Not one of them offered to help me.

Then again, another night, I was stopped because my tail-lights were out. It would have sucked if I got a ticket because I always drive safe, and only go about 5 miles over the speed limit depending on the road. He gave me a warning, AND followed me back to my house (we were only a block away) and helped me fix it. Turned out, all I needed was a fuse.

depends on the police. By virtue of wearing a badge...not automatically no. But *MOST* (contrary to those posting here) are cool and trustworthy. Not all. And I do not believe small town cops are better than city ones. Have every reason to dislike/distrust them. Growing up in a small town with one cop - a dirty one - suspected of (among other things) rape and murder but the victims were teens and no one would listen to them or those around them. I still think he was responsible for a death but there is no way to prove it and he's long gone now. BUT ***MOST*** of the officers I've met and gotten to know since then have COMPLETELY changed my mind from that negativity. I've childhood friends who are cops and I would and have trusted them with my life...not because they have a badge but because that is the kind of PEOPLE they are behind the badge. I've worked for cops and known quite a few others who have been the same way. From that I'd say MOST are *not* worthy of distrust and none are worthy of hate. Justice perhaps. Hate, no.

first off, you have to remember that Cops are human too. they have there bad days just like everyone else. Granted they are in A position of authority and should always be courteous. but I am sure that given the fact that they are all human and not perfect they also have bad days. on the other hand there are some that have bad attitudes and should be taught better manners. Keep in mind all cops are not bad. What would really help is even though they have a bad attitude treat them with respect and as the old saying goes "kill them with kindness" and maybe they will change there attitude. Another explanation is that you get what attitude in return for the attitude you give.

Police have probably one of the most stressful jobs in the world. I understand that they have to be suspicious of everyone as part of their job. I would trust a cop with my life.

But I really hope I never have to, because the last time I met a cop who treated me like anything other than a common criminal, I was six years old. I don't speed, I don't do drugs, I don't push old ladies in front of oncoming traffic. I am a model citizen.

But as a teenager, I find the "nice" cops in my town are far more interested in watching me than in watching out for me. That's life. Could be worse. At least I get to grow out of being a teenager.

Have had contact with police many times(I'm not a criminal)and most of them are alright. I do, however, think there should be a minimum age requirement of 25. Putting guns and power in the hands of some of these young men and women is asking for trouble.

I think the Police take their authority too far. Can not say I don't like them because they will protect you. Can not say I do like them because they will procrastinate a lot when people need protection. I feel that at first, they love their job but then it just becomes the same day in and day out that they get bored and don't have a lot of gusto for it anymore. Sad...
