My grandmother passed away recently without a will, and I am her only living relative. After speaking with an attorney, I have found that it is not worth probating her estate. Basically, she had no assets except for a car. And it would cost my husband and I $2,000 to probate her estate just to get title to a car that is maybe worth $1,000, so we would end up losing money. This is not something we are willing or financially able to do at this time.
But this leaves us with this car. The title is in my deceased step-grandfather's name, and can not be put into my name without going through probate.
What can I do with this car? Can I junk it? Will someone take it for parts? What are my options?

Depending upon which state You are in, You may be able to go to your Department of Motor Vehicles and explain the situation and have the title trasferred to You with minimal cost. We did it for my wifes' grandmother in California.

I BELIEVE you can wait so long and then go to the Secretary Of State (if you are in USA) and you can just have the titled changed into your name. or, you can always get a salvage title. Say you have no title and get a salvage one...i dont know if that would work or not but when my mother in law bought a car (by bailing some loser out of jail) he would not giver her the title. well, she had to wait so long to get the title changed into her name, even without the original title...ask your secretart of state if they have any answers for you!

Just forge your grandfathers name on the title and junk the car. Don't worry he is not going to press charges against you for forgery and since he is the only one who can you have nothing to worry about. Hope I have been helpful.
