My son is almost 1 years old and he will have nights of sleeping through the night but lately he will wake up (or not wake up), screaming his head off like someone was hurting him but no one is. Could he be having nightmares or is there something else going on that i should get him to the dr? He's done something like this before when he was constipated but not for 2 weeks straight. I know he's started "big kid" food, could his system just not be ready yet? Any help would be appriciated. My husband and i are so sleep deprived, I'm afraid that we will snap at each other any minute. Thank you for your help.

My daughter started sleeping through the night around 5/6 months old, and began waking again with crying fits when she began teething. A month or 2 would pass, no problems, then the same thing again. It was more teeth coming through. Try tylenol, or oragel if you think this may be the case. Check for fever - low grade usually means teething. If you are really worried and it's not getting better, a call to the doctor is not a bad idea in any case, if only to ease your mind.

A friend of mine worked for a therapist and said that babies do sometimes get 'night terrors', baby nightmares. If this is the case, it too will pass in time. Just let your baby know you are their for him.

I doubt that 'big kid food' is the culprit, as he sounds more than ready for it.

Good luck and God bless!

Its completely normal for some children to not sleep though the night at this age.. though being put on solid food would be a BIG help.. any child that drinks more than 26 ounces of milk a day should be on solid foods. (As per Dr. Alpard, my pediatrician) My daughter was put on solid foods at 2 1/2 months and has slept through the night (12 hours a night) every day since then (she is now 2 1/2 years old.. it never made her sick in any way.. infact shes only been sick once in her life and it was just a runny nose) her cousin who is three months older was not put on solids until much later and at almost 3 years old he is just now learning to sleep through the night.. he got in the habit of being up all the time because he was hungry.. he also had severe sickness problems with constant ear-aches and stomach problems due to the large amount of milk he was consuming daily... I would suggest you talk to your pediatrician.

my cousin has had night terrors since he was 3 years old and he is now 15 years old. in the middle of the night he'll sit up, not wake up, and scream bloody murder then lay back down. sometimes he thrashes arounded in his bed. in him it's caused by phsycological trauma. i am in no way saying that is you sons problem. let me give you another example. my son is 5 now, but about 6 months ago we had to take his little brother (2 years old at the time) to the emergency room (turns out he's a breath holder). my older son for the next 3 nights would not really wake up, but get up screaming "he's taking the baby, save the baby". and another time he must've seen a cartoon where someone lost a tooth because for a week he would get up, again not really wake, screaming "my tooth" and we would find him thrashing around in his bed looking for his tooth. all we would have to do was tell him that it's ok and lay back down and he would and it would be over. so what i'm trying to say is you should take him to the doctor, but don't worry until his doctor tells you something specific.

Is he too hot, sometimes if they have something happen during the day that upsets them they dream about it and can wake up mad. some kids just hate bed time,I put my 3 year old on the couch about 6 months ago, and he sleeps all night, I hope I can get him into his bed at some point this summer, now that he is sleeping threw the night. sing him songs before bed, tell him a calm story, make bedtime fun say prayers with him even a simple "Dear God, bless me to sleep good., amen" Good luck.

I just went through this with my granddaughter and it happened for 3 nights. So I ended up taking her to the Doctor for her regular checkup and he told me she had an ear infection. She had no fever and no other symptoms except about midnight she would wake up screaming. You might want to have him checked out by the doctor.
