this depends on two things. first, the size of your hard drive. the bigger it is the more junk that the computer has to sift through. Secondly, the length of time since you last defragmented it. They (the computer gods) say you should do it about once every six months.

Well that depends on how badly fragmented the drive is. Generally if it is less than 30% fragmented it will take less then a half hour to finish. If you have never defragged it since you got the computer (and depending how long ago that was) your drive could be in bad shape and it may take a while. I'm also assuming you are using the included utility to do so. While it is built on the Diskeeper engine, it is a very very light version. I recommend Diskeeper (or even Diskeeper Lite Free if you can find it). Diskeeper has tools in it to prevent fragmentation of your drive (FragShield) and can run daily or weekly scheduled defragmentation of your drive when you are not using your computer.

It is not depend on computer speed and OS as it depend on how long time were you did the last difragment.
So Even if you have good computer, if you didn't do that for a long time, it will take too long.

find a utility that has a jet defrag it will speed that up and works well
