The "average" Christian wants to be CHRIST-like, but is bombarded by messages from our culture to do otherwise.
Not fitting into society's standards does bring Christians pain, because those who do not understand the faith belittle, shun, and abuse Christians. (Some of the remarks on Yahoo Answers are examples of that.)
While it is difficult to follow His example, it is possible to live a Christian life, always seeking to do better. Love and forgiveness are keys to His Kingdom.
Living the Christian faith brings immeasurable joy, peace and abundance. But no one, not even JESUS, said it would be easy. That is why so many people "drop out" of the faith or become "lukewarm" Christians.
My choice? I am willing to be ridiculed because I am "out of touch" with our current culture. Because the rewards, here and after death, are so great. (By the way, I am not miserable by not having a television, etc.)
May GOD bless you richly!

Christians can't read.
The average christian that I know behaves as if they are better than me because I am not in their little club.
Most instantly assume because I denounce Jesus that I worship the devil, or eat babies, or that I'm an asshole.
However, when (IF) they actually give me a chance and get to know me, they almost always find that I DO NOT EAT BABIES, OR WORSHIP BEELZEBUB, (the dark father, lord of all evil, HAIL SATAN LOL). After that, they usually begin to question things about their religion. Which is totally cool. How do know if you believe something unless you test/question it first.
Anyone who works in a restaurant or retail will confirm that after church on sundays (when Christians are supposed to go HOME, not out making others work on their "sabbath") christians will invade the establishment and act like TOTAL ASSHOLES towards the staff, with ZERO compassion for those who are SERVING THEM. Maybe christians CAN read, but they have no comprehension skills. Otherwise, they would all act like their imaginary messiah and be good kind compassionate people.
Then they would kill all the infidels. And stone unwed mothers.
And scrape Hypatia's skin off for daring to publish a book on mathematics.

there is no "average Christian response", just as their is no average Buddhist, average Hindu, average agnostic. We are still all individuals, all with human frailties and faults. Sooooo, we all, during the day, lose our temper, get mad, say things we don't mean, and hurt peoples feelings because lots of our emotions are guided by what "we" want.
The best answer I can give you is to try to live by the Golden Rule. In different languages and religions, it is the one constant. I once did a search, and over 50 religions have some form of the Golden Rule.

A real Christian lives and acts like they are saved. They live their life apart from this world. They pray, go to church, and read their Bible. We tell others how much Jesus loves them, and how to be saved. We put our Faith and trust in the Lord. We seek Him, for the will of our life.I spend much of my day praying, and reading the Bible. even when things go bad, God has a reason for it all. I pray and ask Him for His will to be done in any situation. He is always there for me, and will never fail me. I never question God. He knows what is best in my life.

I think they probably do what a lot of people do. Work, raise their family, pay bills, and are kind to others.
