Singapore Airlines (a.k.a SIA or SQ) is the best airline in the world for me. Even though SQ didn't win the "Airline of the Year" award by Skytrax in both 2005 and 2006, I think Singapore Airlines is the best!
And if you ask me why, here are the main reasons:
1) The staffs are friendly, courteous, and try to help you as much as they can.
2) They use big and wide-body aircrafts (such as B777, B747-400, and soon A380-800).
3) Inflight Entertainment (a.k.a. IFE)... No joking, this airline has the best IFE. Although SQ didn't win "Best IFE" award by Skytrax in 2004, 2005, and 2006 (which was won by Emirates), I think SQ is better and also the best. 60 movies, and some of them are even still played on the cinema! Lots of audio CDs, game from Nintendo, and... Berlitz World Traveler! Learning 22 languages just in hours! And I almost forgot this one, Personal TV for every seat in every aircraft. Most aircrafts are equipped with Audio-Video on Demand (AVOD). So, you can choose to play, pause, stop, forward, etc. the movie whenever you like.
4) Food, food, food......... Flying Economy Class? Don't be worried! Economy Class food is very delicious. Take these examples:
Flight from SIN-TPE-LAX, they provide: stir fried chicken in oyster mushrooms ...., sauteed chicken in red wine sauce ....., fried rice with Chinese pork sausages ......, and many more! Or from LAX-TPE-LAX, they provide: seared fish in saffron sauce....., braised egg noodles with seafood ....., Ah Yat's braised chicken ....., and many more! *Flights on June-July 2005.
And if you need low protein, vegetarian, or other special meals just request it! Don't need to be worried once more...
5) SQ usually lands on the terminal that is big and well facilitated. They choose terminal that has a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and sometimes they choose the newer one.
6) A 5-star airline ranked by Skytrax.
7) And finally, they provide an excellent baggage handling.
Now those things make SIA the best international airline.

To each his own opinion by give me my AMERICAN AIRLINES (AA). Any Yes, American Airlines is an international airline and will connect you to more countries than any other single international airline.
Why AA?
That feeling of “No place like home” gives you a sense of security and if you have taken a flight from another continent (I have been Africa, Asia, North and South America. Europe, and Australia) and then connected to American in Europe or some where outside the USA, then you know what I am talking about. Some things you just have to experience it to know it.

I have to agree with Meetha and A Tommy Y.
Singapore Airlines gets my vote.
The inflight entertainment is great. Good movie selection. You can rewind and everything.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. So much more than other airlines I've flown.
Good food.

I haven't flown Singapore Airlines yeyt, but my opinion the best three are:
(1) Qantas - Excellent service, clean planes, great staff and many perks to passengers in all cabins.
(2) LAN Chile - Beautiful flight attendants, elegant uniforms. amazing ground staff, and the flight from Santiago to Easter Island was amazingly smooth and comfortable. The flight to Santiago from Montevideo was amazing and I got a free upgrade to first class!
(3) KLM - Dutch efficiency, great onboard services, very kind and caring flight attendants. Everyone spoke perfect English and were very caring.
(4) Air France - Excellent service on the ground and in-flight. Very friendly and knowledgable. Good food and great products in their onboard duty-free shop.
(5) Iberia - Great Miami to Madrid flight. Nice onboard perks; pretty flight attendants and great customer service.

Singapore Airlines...
It has a lot of movies and films selections. The food is good too! And the stewardess are really2 helpful. They are the best if you're flying economy class, and especially if you're travelling with small children and infants.

South African Airways
friendly staff, they used to give you mineral water in bottles and not the cups like BA. hate the cups.
Virgin was crap as well
Liked Lufthansa too... they let me go out of the plane on a stop-over in Frankfurt for a sneaky smoke...
guess it depends on what is important to you.

continental even thought they are based in newerk, they have great service to a variety of different international destinations
