Hey, "A Guy"...why the hell do you think they call it a "quarter"? Because it's one-quarter of a dollar! It doesn't matter what the exchange rate is, or how much a Canadian dollar is as compared to a US dollar, or what the currency is actually called...if you're in Canada, and you buy something that costs 75 cents, and you give them a dollar, or "loonie", you're probably going to get a 25 cent coin back. 25 cents is a QUARTER of a dollar.

Now, just to say I've answered the question...actually both of you are right. Canada doesn't have states, they have provinces and territories. But the country is divided up like the US is divided up into states, so you both win.

You've just won 25 cents. Now what are you going to do with your loot?
Canada doesn't have states, but does have provinces and territories.
Perhaps you should make that 25 cents the start of a travel fund so you can come and explore Canada for yourself one day.
Contrary to what one of your respondants replied, Canada does have quarters, also nickles and dimes. In coinage, we don't have one dollar bills or two dollar bills, but coins that are called 'loonies' - because they have a Canadian loon on them, in a $1 denomination, and 'toonies' which are $2 coins.
Later this year, a $5 coin will be issued, but it hasn't been named yet. Now you can win another bet from your friend about the money.
Hope you had a great Canada Day. Our country is 139 years old today.

Canada doesn't have states. It has provinces. But they don't have quarters, so make sure you get paid in USD, not CAD.

Actually, contrary to Old Lady, Canada DOESN'T have quarters (or dimes or nickels). They have coins that are referred to as "quarters" in everyday language, but they are NOT actually quarters. They are 25 cent pieces. It's sad when an American knows more about Canada than a Canadian.

Surfin, nobody is saying that $.25 isn't a quarter of a dollar. What I was saying is that to refer to a Canadian $.25 piece as a Quarter is technically WRONG! A Canadian $.25 piece is simply a 25 cent piece, not a Quarter, whereas an American $.25 is properly referred to as a Quarter. An American $.25 coin has the words "Quarter Dollar" written on it. The Canadian coin DOESN'T. The American coin is called a Quarter commonly BECAUSE this is written on it. In fact, according to your own government it IS technically NOT referred to as a Quarter: "According to the Royal Canadian Mint, the official name for the coin is the 25 cent coin, but in practice the term quarter is nearly universal."

Maybe I'm being highly technical, and you're right to say it is a quarter of a dollar (Loonie), but when I heard that Gee-Whiz knowledge that it is officially NOT called a Quarter I thought it was cool. In other words, I recognize it is commonly called a quarter, but in truth it isn't actually supposed to be called such! And speaking of Canadian coins, the Toonie is cool. I like polar bears, and a coin of two colors is neat.

Wow, Americans answer with the dumbest things (sorry, just reading that "I believe every country has states, just like the USA" answer.

Canada does not have states. Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories. Look it up online. Check out www.geocities.com/canada_facts or www.wikipedia.com.

I'm not sure what you can get with a quarter but Canada does not have states so you can collect your winnings.
