If you're NOT married to an American citizen, you have to take several things into account, that is if you are looking for permanent residency which I suppose you are:

1. Where you are from - the Govt has quotas for how many immigrants they take in from each region every year
2. You have to show proof that you have a job, a job offer, or sufficient funds to keep you going
3. If you satisfy these requirements, you have to do the usual all immigrants (LEGAL immigrants) have to do: biometrics, medical checkup, all that stuff ...
4. Also bear in mind you have to pay for all that stuff yourself, including the fee for filing the papers ... none of these fees is refundable whether you're accepted or not ...
5. If you don't think you'll qualify ... get an immigration lawyer, there are loads of them around ...
Good luck!

depends on your situation: if you are married to a citizen or resident, both of you need to file for change of status for u, if you have a job, they need to file to get you a work visa, if you just want to be here and you have not justification.... join a very long line.... unless you are from a country whose quota is not filled, you may have a chance, if you can claim some evil things are happening in your country (and it has to be very bad), file for asylum,
But the important things you will needed if you are eligable: proper Id, passport, police checks, medical history, valid visa, lots of money and time, patience, and more time, birth certificate, the rest of things you need is dictated by your situation.
Best thing is to contact a lawyer....
