It is necessary in some cases. It is a powerful tool against colonialism used by those being colonized. if the nation is being colonized or is a dependency of a powerful country, nationalism is positive. For example (tibetian nationalism) Tibet with China,(palestinian nationalism) Palestine with Israel ,(puertorican nationalism) Puerto Rico with US, (irish nationalism)Northern Ireland with United Kingdom.
In these cases nationalism has not allowed assimilation and is a barrier against the colonialists.

Some other nations have dissapeared because their nationalism was weak or mostly destroyed, a good example of this is Hawaii. The Hawaiians today are in a hard process of learning the language (hawaiian), their own language that was lost and are now,sadly, an ethnic minority in their own land.

Definitely bad since it is simply a groups ability to use coercive power within a certain geographical area. And though there are several Absraction which can fall under that definition, it is the use of initiatory coercive power that makes them all bad, mankind should be free.

My opinion is that it is bad. I consider myself a citizen of the world.
