First, you need at least a red and a white wine - nothing fancy, just something you like. Next you need beer, preferably from a microbrewery like Sam Adams(don't do commercial unless your friends like it best).
For margaritas, cheap tequila is best. Do have rum, brandy and perhaps different flavors of schnapps on hand, but don't get the flavored rums and brandies unless you are going to serve specific drinks on a regular basis. Ask your friends what their favorite drinks are and have the ingredients ready for parties and other get-togethers. Crown is good for shots, and if you're going to have gin, are you using it for martinis? If so, you will need some sweet and/or dry vermouth depending on your guests' preferences. You might also want to have some Southern Comfort, Jack Daniels and Jim Beam on hand. And don't forget the vodka - Ketel One if you can afford it, otherwise get some Stolichnaya.

of course it depends on your taste but I suggest.... in order of importance for me....
1. a high quality vodka: my favorite is ciroc.. made in france from grapes, 5 times distilled, very smooth. I store a good vodka in the freezer (does not melt the ice in the cocktail shaker, stronger drink) others might suggest grey goose(sweeter), chopin(kinda nutty flavor), belvadere, stoli..... good for vodka martinis, shots, or sipping str8.
2. a "well" vodka: less expensive for mixing cocktails. Absolute, skyy....
3. top shelf tequilla, Patron, 1800 silver, for the first margarita or sippin
4. well tequilla, quervo gold, for parties or second and third drink....
5. cointreu, this is a bit more expensive but a good substitute for triple sec
6. top shelf gin, for a gin martini.... that is about all I use gin for.... if I have a gin and tonic I just go ahead and use the good stuff.... most people would suggest bombay, I guess, but I prefer Hendricks ( www.hendricksgin.com ) If you can find it...
7. dry vermouth.... some people use it in the martini... some people prefer to just look at the bottle and not use it in the drink.... If you know what I mean...
8. captain morgan rum or a dark non spicy rum...

Stuff that I like to keep on hand for company but rarely drink myself.......
irish wiskey.... For the St. Patty's day i'll have a shot or two...
Dewers scotch
Jack Daniels
johnny walker black label
flavored vodkas for mixed drinks, citron etc...
Grand Marnier orange Liquor
Chambord, rasberry liquor
I think you are pretty much set with this...... I don't think I forgot anything.........several kinds of beer, wine..... etc

HOPE I HELPED

Sounds like you need a good Vodka. Another thing you might need is a good scotch and maybe some Captain. A good Vodka would be Absolute but a cheaper one would be Smiroff. Another thing you want to have is some wine coolers or some malt liquiors. Some people will suggest a beer or two but it all depends on what you like. An imported beer might be good with what you have but I would suggest bottle over cans. It will give the surroundings a more club/bar feel. For a pub feel you should use cans or mugs are even better.

Silver tequila is not aged or anything right out of the distillery, ok for mixing the more expensive it is the more charcoal filtering it has and of course 100% blue agave. I would at least stock a Reposado, cazadores is a good brand

to have basic bar you need.
vodka, rum, gin, tequila, orange juice, canberry juice, sour mix, cream, triple sec, grenadine, lime juice, assorted cordials like: baileys, Kahlua, amaretto, creme de cacao(light), melon liquor, sloe gin, vermouth(dry and sweet)

as far as whiskey good choice on the crown royal. Get some bourbons in there: Jim Bean, Jack Daniels, E&J (brandy), your choice of cognac

Hope this hleps

If your friends like a good american whiskey like Jack Daniel's...Try George Dickel #12 Tennessee Whisky. Its very good over ice, and about 10 bucks a bottle cheaper than J.D.
Otherwise, avoid cheap booze...spend the few extra bucks and buy name brand stuff....
Another cool one is Chambourd liquer..made from berries. Its a nice looking bottle to keep on the bar, and good with vodka...just a few drops. Too bad its French :)............CHEERS

Vodka

depends on what you and/or your guests like to drink. but I think having a bottle of different liqour is good; vodka, rum, gin, scotch/whiskey, tequila, wine, beer etc, so that way you can make different drinks based upon your or your guests' preference.
