well, i have 3 cats and 1 litter box and i never have had a problem with them going to the bathroom anywhere else but in their box. alot of ppl suggest a box per cat, this isn't necessary if u keep up with the cleaning of it. cats choose to use the bathroom "out of the box" if it isn't cleaned. i scoop twice a day, and dump the whole thing weekly, thoroughly scrubbing it and replacing it with all fresh new litter. the arm n hammer sprinkle stuff is awesome and gives off a clean fresh scent. i know this prolly isn't the answer u were hoping for as it is a lot of work but the upside is the csats will b much happier. and fyi, if any of the cats r male and they have urinated in the house, it won't b the last time. also, when an animal is "fixed" they also have a tendancy to b better at goin in the box

You have to make sure that the cats know where the litter box is. You should have only one litter box in one place and don't move it usless you move to a different place. If the cat is still peeing and pooping all over the house then you should put the cat's nose near their mess and tell them no and then bring them to the box, put them in, and tell them basically that that is where they need to go. I know it sounds weird but I did that for both of my kittens and they have learned. There are times where they do make messes but those are rare and at those times I have to bring them to the box. They have stopped doing this and believe it or not they do understand what you are telling them especially if you yell at them. I hope that helps you and good luck.

REHOME!!?? What the He** is THAT supposed to mean?! If you mean give the cat away, just say so!!
The others are correct about ruling out illness, and making sure the litter boxes stay clean.
Here are MY suggestions:
If the cats smell their (or other cats) urine or feces they will continue to go in the same spots until you are able to COMPLETELY remove the odor. UNFORTUNATELY, this is sometimes VERY difficult to do. Their ARE products which you can try which may (or may not) help. You can find these in pet supply catalogs like Foster & Smith,at your local pet shops, or possibly at your local veterinarians.
You may also want to try bleach, baking soda or vinegar (NOT AT THE SAME TIME!). But, STAY AWAY FROM AMONIA, as it may intensify the smell.
Also, it MAY help if you confine the cats away from the problem areas for a few weeks (or even months) while you continue to clean the spots regularly. This will assure that they don't continue to make the problem worse.
GOOD LUCK!!

This is a hard one....first you have to rule out any medical conditions. So, a trip to the vet is needed. If that comes back ok, then you have to rule out other things. For example, where is the litter box placed? How often do you clean it? How many do you have? You must also get an odor remover and get the smell out of the places they have already gone. Those scents remind them that that area is the place to go. DO NOT kick your cat outside....they are in danger of getting hurt or killed, or getting a horrible disease. If need be, try to rehome them. Sometimes a change of scenery fixes the problem.

With some cats if they smell another cats scent in the litter box.. they will not use it, try as you might... it won't happen. What you need to try to do is get a new box and put it in a different room.. just for your cat. Some cats don't care if other cats use it, but their are fussy cats.

cats usually do that if there is a problem with them. My cat had a kidney infection and did that. When that was fixed no more problem.
Put them in the litter box and take their paws and make digging movements with it.
Are they neutered/spayed? that could also be the problem, Call a Vet. and they will give you a lot of suggestions. Try this website http://www.mspca.org/site/pp.asp?c=gtIUK4OSG&b=127311

I moved into a place with two other cats my two cats were not raised with. The whole time, they had territory wars, thus "marking" thier territories. For one year, I had to constantly clean messes.
Male cats are worse about it, especially if they aren't fixed. Grown cats that weren't raised together probably won't become friends and will continue to mark thier territory. Keeping a litter box clean is also very important.

in addition to what the others said you could try changing the litter boxes more often. Some cats are very finicky and won't use dirty litter, even when there is only one mess in it.

Cats are particular about their litter boxes. If they are not kept clean, then they will find somewhere else to go. (Do you like using a disgusting toilet?) They will also find alternative places to poop & pee if they are distressed or upset about something. Happy cats do not usually do this.
