he was the commander of a Jewish group in the Galilee and when it seemed hopeless he hid in a cave and let his men die.

then he joined the Romans when he surrendered

He had been a captive of Rome years before and knew their might and how badly they wanted to reintegrate Jerusalem into the empire. He didn't betray the Jews he just knew the Romans would crush them and he didn't want to see bloodshed and the destruction of the city.
