actually, that is only the correct answer if you are truly "very well". if you are going to take the time to ask someone "how do they do" you should also take the time to be truly concerned about how they do and not be wishing that they say very well just so you dont have to listen to them if they are unwell.

Honestly? Or did you want the usual answer? "Fine"? If someone answers this question truthfully, people really don't want to hear it.... the perceived whining, etc. For instance, I actually have a headache and I'm irritated at my slack-@$$ pool contractor. But, I suppose I'll conform and answer.... "Very well, thank you, and you?"

How do I do what exactly? The phrase "How do you do?" has always struck me as incomplete. It is probably a left over from a more formal way of speaking.
