i love shopping in bangkok. chatuchak is very good place to get everything under one roof. its a massive marketplace. its easy to get lost. its hot n crowded. you rub sweaty shoulders over the weekends. you might wanna compare prices n shop around, but you might never find the same stall again im serious! bargaining is a must. if not u be ripped off.
although chatuchak is a place to get cheap stuffs, i personally prefer the comfort of a air-conditioned mall n paying just a bit more. i love this mall pronounced "MahBoonKong". the pathumwan princess hotel is just above/beside it. so thats another landmark for you. i can spend one whole day here. but you cant really bargain here.
another place to go would be the area around the Baiyoke Sky Tower.. the neighbouring streets around when you are at this famous landmark, you be able to find some great ladies fashion n some really cheap buys... just walk around..

Shopping is great in Bangkok. If you are there over weekend, go to Chatuchak Weekend market. If not, there are a couple of other markets nearby, quite new ones too. In fact, next to the weekend market is Chatuchak Plaza, opens weeklong with arts, home decor etc. These are better quality and bettr priced items. Across the road is a new market open 7 days a week too. Here you will find interesting stuff, so you need not limit to weekends to head to Chatuchak now.
Suan Lum Night Bazaar is a place to shop and unwind at night. A night flea market, place has eateries too. Give it a go. Opens in evenings till late.
Other good shopping will be MBK Centre as people have said earlier 6 floors of shops. Not enough, cross over to Siam Square for small shops with limited stocks fashion items. Still not satisfied, cross over to Siam Paragon, one of the newest mall around. With an indoor marine aquarium, worth a visit. If still not enough, cross the road to Siam Discovery Centre for another round of designer lable shopping, on top of those in Siam Paragon.
Central Chidlom Department store is popular with the locals. Go and have a try if you can.
Other will be Central at Lat Phrao. Also a local favourite.
There are many more, but I cannot recall now. You can contact me if you like .

Visit Bangkok's most famous 35-acre outdoor market, Chatuchak selling everything particularly handicrafts which can vary in price and quality. Competition is fierce between vendors hence you will have to look around. Public transportation is readily available, from buses, the Skytrain or taxi.
N.B. For more information visit the link below. The website offers other shopping sites of interest. Good luck and have fun.

floating market (s) are OK
Best is Chatachuk, it's near Mo Chit Skytrain station and not far to walk from northern bus stn
in the offices there is bank and place you can get free map (you NEED a map) mark off on map where is stalls you like or you never find them again. some stalls will even post your goods home for you. it's HOT under the stalls - make sure you drink lots.
if you love to shop get overnight bus to Chang Mai, stop at ROSE GUEST HOUSE (you have to book ahead, but it is clean and run by some Canadians (the BEST old people EVER)) bus will cost you about $4 they feed you snacks but you buy own meals at the stops. DO NOT LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN BAGS THAT GO IN THE BUS STORAGE, the first 30km the bus goes very slowly, there is a man going through ALL bags in the hold.
there is GH in Chang Mai called 'Nice place' don't you beleive it, HaHa

Know that Chatachuk is a weekend market and only open on Saturday and Sunday. Same stuff as many other places, but better prices...if you can bargain.
MBK is a good option for just about anything.
Pantip Plaza good for electronics and pirated cds/dvds.
Upscale? Emporium shopping center. Also new HUGE mall called Siam Paragon. And just next door is Siam Center and across the street - Siam Square.

It depends what do you want to buy?
Pirate software, music cds and dvds? taser guns, and knives... easy to get...
or silk stuff ?
hears a tit, never go shopping with a tuk tuk driver and the jewel shop his mate owns is a rip off.
