There is a school of thought in physics that says that all particles are alive. People respond to stimuli. So do plants, and everything that we define as 'alive'. They respond in predictible patterns. A chemist will tell you that any chemical also responds to stimuli in a noticable pattern.... a system. It cannot be proven that we as people do not respond in a different type of pattern from chemicals (and even sub-atomic particles). Ours is just bigger. Physicists (some) say that since these particles respond to stimuli (that is one of the indicators of life, you'll remember), that either we must not be alive (which is absurd) then they must be alive. Odd, huh?

The function of sex is the propagation of the species.
The human body has been designed in a manner that only generally one sperm cell will mate and fertilize the egg in the woman. The rest die out.

Not only living cells, but even inanimate objects are supposed to be the resting places, as are human bodies of souls as per certain faiths. The sperm that die out are the lucky ones, because they have finishes their journey on earth relatively easily.

However, to each his own set of beliefs.

my 2 cents

they have life, but they don't reach either heaven or hell the sparkle of life (or soul or whatever you may call it) continue to exist in the same form that was previous to this primary "incarnation" = floating in the "unborn" existence. Only after developing "a body" (even embrion) the soul gain acces to senses and thus begin to develop in to a conscience becomes polarised by positive or negative influence.

Now THAT'S what I call an interesting question!
I really hope you get some genuine responses to this one.
As a non religious postulation, assuming there was a soul, I'd say it was created at the point of the first cellular division.
I'll have to ponder upon this one, cheers!
