I had this problem until abt a few months ago.I had PPD with my first pregnancy & it sorta carried over even after I got over it.So,after losing the 60 pounds I had gained while pregnant I gained abt 20 pounds by sheer stress-eating.I was aware of what I was doing but wasn't doing anything to control it.Then another pregnancy & another 55 pounds weight gain made me look huge.I did lose my pregnancy weight but I'm stuggling to lose that 20 pounds I had gained by stress eating.I have madea start now-I have cut down my food intake by 50% of what I normally eat,but include more fruits & veggies-I snack exclusively on this esp. when I'm stressed. And absolutely no such food which is bad for me,which includes my favourites, like sweets, pastries, fries, chips, etc.,I don't even buy them anymore,so if I don't have 'em I can't eat 'em.And I workout.Minimum of 1 hr everyday-belive me,it really helps burn off my frustrations.I feel much more in control of myself & I have already lost 5 of those 20 pounds in a month.I'm sure the others have given you very good advice.Follow what works for you & get whatever u need.Good luck.

That is not an unusual response to extreme emotions. The question is not how do I stop eating when I become emotional, the question is how can I control my life so that my emotions do not over rule my logic. You know in your head that food will not make your anger or depression go away, it will only numb those feelings. To become a self actualized person who is in control of her emotional reactions, or at least has appropriate ones, you need to expand your knowledge base about yourself. What is the real problem here? I think it is not the eating so much as it is your sense of no control. Eating is the one thing that you truly do have control over. Nobody can put that food in your mouth but you. This may be a form of your expressing the control you Do have, through over eating you feel like you have some control over something in your life. I would think that by focusing on the root of your problems, the things that seem to be causing these emotions that lead you to eat, rather than the behavior that it produces (the eating itself) you will have a better chance at resolving this problem for yourself. I would suggest counseling, but that is not the only way. Honest self reflection may be all that you need.

A journal may help you. When you
feel down or reach for something to
eat try a pen and a paper. Turn on
some soothing relaxing music or
a style that you really enjoy. Going
for a walk, even just picking up the
phone to chat with a friend may
shift your energy so you won't rely
on food. Put up some positive saying
in different places so you can look at
them to keep you focused. Have fun
with your new process. Be the best
you can be.

try to do something else. go excerise and go for a run and it will help you feel better too, try distracting your mind off food by doing other activites that will at the same time help you get your mind off whatever is making you angry, depressed, sad or stressed out. also brush your teeth with a good minty toothpaste. it's the best thing to stop cravings and eating when you really aren't hungry.

go for a run or a long walk outside. Drink lots of water and blast your favorite music, write what you feel and tear or burn it up. Draw, join a message board. Food isn't a good way to deal with feelings. You could become very ill or obese.

Try talking with someone you know you can trust and confide in or if there is no one around... writing is a good way to release your frustrations. Just involve yourself in other activities, especially things you enjoy. Praying, writing, and talking it out has always helped me. Good Luck!!!
