In general - except for the basic a$$holes out there - people in society don't know how to deal with people who have any type of mental illness, and inside they are afraid. It's the same with people in wheelchairs, and any other things that are not perceived as by society as being "normal."
Unfortunately you can't do a whole lot to change other's concepts and their reactions that manifest themselves as a result of their ideas. However, you CAN simply accept yourself for who you are, which will go a LONG way in your relations with others (people who are pretty accepting of themselves are more often accepted by others). Also in accepting of yourself, you will tend to be less mindful of how others perceive you.
Once you are more believing in yourself, others will tend to see that and say, "hey, that person has something good going on inside. I wonder what they are like; hmmmm."
As for those who won't accept you, well, that's their loss. Also ask yourself, "if they don't accept me because of my mental illness and cannot get past that to see who I really am, are they even worth knowing to begin with?"
People who matter don't judge. And people who judge don't matter.
Take Good Care!!!

Because the majority of society is biased. And stupid. They believe that if anyone is different than they are, then the person is not worthy of belonging.
I'm sorry that it happens to you. I know a girl who is bipolar, and people in our school always treat her like she's a disease or something. I think that it's ridiculous. Maybe one day people will stop being stupid.
Lots of luck. <3

I get the same treatment. My family is in denial about the sexual abuse I went through and they tell me that I'm crazy and I'm making it up. I am a christian and have attended different churchs tring to find one that accepts me and my illness but they don't. They believe if you have Christ in your heart you would not have bi-polar, depression and dissociative disorder like I got. My friends tell me that my alters are evil and the devil and they say I'm crazy. The precious Lord above is the only one who accepts me for who I am and he has been with me all my life, he is in my heart and he is the only one I trust. If you're like me I feel abandonded again, denied being listened to, isolated, lonely and angry. People don't understand how I can allow an alter to burn my arms up. Dah I don't even feel it. Until I wake up into myself. Then I go to the hospital to be told that I did it and why would I do such a thing. I've accepted that I won't be accepted by other because they don't understand. People have to experience it for themselves. It took me years to accept my illness myself lot alone expect people that don't care enough to research and learn about it. So they can help you out. Another thing people are afraid of my illness. Well anyways try to accept you're self and tell others if they would like to learn about your mental illness so they can help you out you will get them some literture on it. Good luck! hugs!

Are you taking your meds? Do you honestly try to fit in? If you want a rational answer then I would need more info. Pedephiles claim mental illness too. But I have no sympathy for them at all.

Lie. It's sad but you won't change their attitude. Be an activist for mental health, but in your own life try to make sure to keep quiet about your illness.

People tend to despise what they don't understand. It is ignorance, pure and simple. People would rather mistreat or ignore those who are different than learn the reason. We are a society of "Jones'" and we don't want to understand the "Smith's" of the world.
