lancaster is very near where i live. food in lancaster is well...available all over the place. theres lovely little cafes and such, and as its a univerity town, everything is really cheap. as for places to visit, lancaster has a castle which has guided tours. its right in the centre of town ya can't miss it. personally though i LOVE york, its about a 2 hour drive from lancaster, eally beautiful city, and again a uni town so its cheap. great for tourists, and make sure you go to the cathedral there its amazing. the castle in york isnt much to see. er... if you like countryside, lancaster is abotu 45 minutes from the lake district (travel north up the m6, then onto the A590 and you're there), coniston, windermere, keswick are all beautiful places. you can also get to scotland in about 3 hours if that interests you at all. blackpool about 40 minutes drive if you like casino's and amusement park things- make sure you get fish and chips from there :)

You are near the Lake District, which is quite nice, and there are lots of places of interest in Northumberland, and the Scottish Borders.
English food is variable -as is food in most parts of the world, it depends who is cooking it. You will usually find good value for money in Pubs, and Lancaster will sport a selection of ethnic restaurants, which are also usually good value. If you are into "Fine Dining" try the Good Food Guide, or the Michelin Guide where you will find some excellent restaurants, but they are likely to be expensive

English food is wonderful, if you are in Lancashire then you must try pies and pickled red cabbage with a mug of tea, mmmmnnn lovely!
Also a good English breakfast with black pudding and fried bread, a ham sarni with pease pudding, my mouth is watering already!
Fish and chips out of a newspaper is a MUST as is a chip butty.
Lancashire hot pot is a good filling meal you cant go back to where ever you are from without sampling this delightful dish.

Lancashire have their own sausages with herbs in, I don't like them, so if you don't want herby sausages avoid eating them when you go out.
There'll be plenty of variety in food, chip shops, chinese, indian, little cafes etc. And I think the lake district would be the nicest place to visit near there.
