These days with many folks on the national do not call list, cold calling is a dying form of prospecting. (note you better be checking your numbers against that list or you can be fined big time).

It is almost impossible to get a large sale from a first time cold call, however, you can establish the relationship that leads to bigger sales.

However, cold walking can still be an effective way to get in front of business owners. No, you aren't likely to get a big deal from just walking in, and that's not even the initial goal. Your goal is to establish a relationship that can be developed.

Different agents have different approaches. It is probably best to have some idea of a product to talk about, but your primary goal is to set appointments to come back and really get to know the business owner, and feel out what he may genuinely need from you.

Cold walking is also effective for individuals too, in fact, one firm, Edward Jones, has its reps do that regularly beginning with their own neighborhood. Many a good book has been built that way.

Good luck.

Anyone can get lucky and contact the right person. But, doing some research first will enhance your chances for success. Understand the marketplace. Identify potential clients who have a need for your product or service. Calling people or companies with no need or money for your product is a waste of time. Seems obvious but it's done quite often. If you're calling companies find out who has the authority to make the decision to buy your product. Your research should identify industries and people that have the capital or need for your service. A good library has all the resources for your research. Ask your librarian. Before calling develop a script and practice reciting what you will say with a friend or business associate. You must sound confident. Most of all do not get discouraged when you are turned down. It will happen most of the time. The more calls you make the more success you will have.

Cold calling can work, however I think it is probably the least effective means of marketing/prospecting. It takes a special kind of person to be able to do it and with a very stable self-esteem, cause you will get thrashed by the folks on the other end. In making large deals with business clients I would pretty well rule this out altogether and focus on getting in front of people face-to-face and building a relationship that way. This gives you the chance to make a much more complete presentation and creates the kind of personal impression prospective clients are able to remember and revisit.

Cold calling is not a waste of time, but you have to keep in mind that you will only get sales a small minority of the time. You have to be persistent and keep a positive attitude, do not be rude to anyone even if they choose not to buy from you. You may end up calling them again, always leave a door open for future sales.

All sales, including cold calls, are about talking to the right person at the right time.

The thing with cold calls is that they are supposed to be combined with other promotions. If you do enough, something has to work. It's a law of large numbers thing.

were very helpful with chilly calls. yet, I knew I had a product that the corporate i became calling on might want to probable use. also, it many times required 4 - 5 stick with-up calls to make the sale. and many the chilly calls ended up being, by the years, $100,000 and up a 12 months money owed.
