Extremism is a problem for all faiths. I really believe that the problem is that most Westerners, and Christians in particular, don't understand how integrated Islam is with the culture of the people who practice that religion.
There is no question that the teachings of Mohammed are held dearly by all Muslims. Most are just content to live their lives by the Koran, and just try to be good people. But there is always a minority who feel that their's is the only true faith and see violence as the only answer. These are not Muslims in my eyes. They are Islamists. They see the Koran as literal truth. The don't actually try to understand it. They just read the words and do what those words tell them to do. They don't want to learn from the teachings and thus grow as a Muslim and a person.
I really believe that religious teachings do help
those that believe in them. But they should never be used as a hammer. They should only be used to improve you own life and help you grow as a person. Just my two cents.

Of course not all Muslims are bad! That's a ridiculous and unfair assumption on the part of some.

The problem is, all they hear from the Media is what the extremists, terrorists are doing and then they falsley believe that all Muslims must be like them. They need to educate themselves and look around their own Community. The Muslims who live in their towns, cities certainly aren't acting like the extremist and are peacefully practising their faith and getting along just fine with their fellow man.

We have a Muslim Community in our City and once a year they have an Open House at their Mosque. It's always well-attended and the food is so yummy - but most of all, it give's us a chance to talk to each other and see that we have more similarities than differences.

Don't lose heart, the majority of people do not think that way.

I agree that not all practice violence but that does not make your religion true. Also you must admit that most of Islam is violent to some degree as is evident almost every day on the news. Even in countries not in "war" right now people are persecuted and killed if they leave Islam. That is not "peaceful" Multitudes march with signs saying "behead" people for anything contrary to Islam so if Islam is "peaceful" why do so many use violence not only now but historically. Maybe Islam just has a few that are peaceful to try to put up a false front for the rest. I haven't seen very many of the peaceful ones petitioning the government and crying out in the press and from their preaching against the violence. A few words here and there as if they are forced to but no major cry against it.

There are a lot of people answering questions here that simply want to attack any religion/belief system that is different than their own.Ideally, this site would give all of us a chance to not only express our beliefs but also learn to respect those who believe differently.

I have read several books about The Prophet Muhammad, and while I am a Christian, I have a deep admiration for what he was able to accomplish in Arabia 1400 years ago.

Islam is a beautiful religion, and it is unfortunate that some people choose to put it down without learning about it first.

That said, there is hope. There is more interest among moderate and progressive Christians than ever before to learn about Islam and The Prophet. And recent polls show there is a growing number of Christians who have positive feelings about Islam and Muslims.

This gives me hope that the narrow-minded people you refer to will soon be greatly outnumbered by those who have a deep respect for your faith.

Peace be with you.

Most people do understand that and you have a right to believe whatever you wish, but within your belief system you have those that will not tolerate any other beliefs but their own. This is the root of the killing and torturing of thousands of innocent people. We cannot, and will not stand by for this terrorism by whatever name you wish to call it. Islam is your religion and you presumably abide by it's laws. Where did Mohammed order the slaying of innocents? If you want to show the world the good side of Islam, I suggest you work to show it's true meaning and attempt to stop the killings. If you are not part of the solution, you are automatically part of the problem and even if not actively an enemy, you are certainly viewed with suspicion. As a true Muslim, help us end this horror.

Lol, people like Kitten are so funny. All religions are man-made, otherwise there wouldn't be so many!
I don't have a problem with Muslims, my roommate in college is a Muslim. I have a very vague understanding about the religion-but then again, I have a vague understanding about ALL religions, really.
Not everybody thinks Muslims are terrorists, just like not all Christians are bible-thumping hate-mongers.
Although, judging from some of the content put out on this site, you really couldn't tell...

Most of the Muslim friends I have are good blokes and honest businessmen, it is your mullahs and religious heads who misconstrue your religion and issue fatwas against a person expressing something (which is a fundamental right for every single human), or egging on the misguided persons on a jihad with promise of 77 (or whatever)houris if they loose their lives for fighting for a cause (that probably serves a particular selfish need or sets of need, rather than an actual religious need) is the reason that your community has a bad name.

Dogma is something that Muslims of the world have to get out of, and I hope they do, for why should religion matter at all?

I'm a Muslim and I agree with you.... I met alot of people on YA that think of us so badly...Before getting on to this website....I thought that there are only miss-understood things between us but we're all friendly to each other(because I have alot of friends of different religions and my mom is a christian and they respect my religion and i respect theirs)...but after reading some answers to some questions and even the way some questions are asked I realized that some people have got a really bad idea about Islam...and I'm really so sorry about that...I wish that these conflicts in this category between Muslim and christian or people of other religions will stop...because if they'll continue we'll never get to know each other well and have good relationships between each other!

I think you're question is as biased as the people who caused you to ask it. Don't get me wrong, it's a good question. You're right in saying that some muslims aren't "bad". People generalize and say they "hate Muslims". In reality, they hate the muslim religion not the person behind it. Just as not every Christian isn't perfect, every Muslim isn't evil. The basis behind the dislike of the Muslim faith is that it derives from a disobedience of Abraham in the Bible. And to the reply that "every religion was made by a man" --obviously you don't understand religion. And according to Christian belief, Christianity is the only religion whose God is true, so Muslim is on the "Do Not" list.

The Holy Quran is the true answer. I converted to Islam after I did many years of research. The Holy Quran has never, never been tampered with, I just hope people will do the homework before making any suggestive remarks.
