Animal milk was first used as beverage at the beginning of animal domestication. Goats and sheep were domesticated in the Middle East between 9000 and 8000 BC. Goats and sheep are ruminants: mammals adapted to survive on a diet of dry grass, a food source otherwise useless to humans, and one that is easily stockpiled. The animals were probably first kept for meat and hides, but dairying proved to be a more efficient way of turning uncultivated grasslands into sustenance: the food value of an animal killed for meat can be matched by perhaps one year's worth of milk from the same animal, which will keep producing milk — in convenient daily portions — for years. (McGee 8–10)
Around 7000 BC, cattle were being herded in parts of Africa and Turkey. Milk was also consumed in the British Isles during the Neolithic period. The use of cheese and butter spread in Europe, parts of Asia and parts of Africa. Cattle were then introduced to European colonies after the Age of exploration.
In the Western world today, cow's milk is extracted on an industrial scale for human consumption and industrial uses. It is the most commonly consumed form of milk. Commercial-scale dairy farming using automated milking equiment produces the vast majority of milk in many countries. Types of cattle such as the Holstein have been specially bred for increased milk production. According to McGee, 90% of the dairy cows in the United States are Holsteins, and 85% in Great Britain. The answer is most cultures that raise cattle or other animals that give milk use milk as part of their diet, and have done so since before recorded history.
In the USA, milk producers pressured our government to induce people to consume dairy products every day, even though milk is laced with chemicals and hormones and many people can't digest it properly.
As for the taste, I personally find it foul tasting no matter how it's used in food.
I use saccharin only in my tea, and the product I use has lactose (milk sugar) in it as a vehicle, can't escape dairy products, it seems :).
I've added a link to a site that provides some more information on milk, it's worth a look. I never cease to be amazed at how pervasive dairy products are in the American diet, but I'll pass, thank you.

Humans are the ONLY species on earth that continue to drink milk beyond infancy. The history of milk actually began centuries ago when nursing human mothers failed to lactate. When there where no nurse maids available they experimented with milk from various mammals. Unfortunately, cow milk was designed for calves and not humans and the babies supplemented with cows milk died from malnutrition. Then another thought came to mind...if the mothers drank the milk, maybe it would help them to lactate. Well that didn't work either, but the mother found it was tasty. Thus, beginning a nation of obesity. You ever wonder why a cow is fat? Cows Milk is not nutritional for a human. It is fortified by man to make it better for us. If it was so great calves would be drinking from their mothers tit's until they are slaughtered for the dinner table.

I don't even think it is "good" for us to drink.
I think rice or soy milk is much better for us. Especially since we have such a weight problem in the US. But some people in other countries need animal milk to sustain life since there are not many other resources for fat.
There still is no other way to make true cheese and yogurt.
But a long time ago, perhaps going hand in hand with the first civilizations which raised farm animals for food, they were drinking cow or goat's milk.

Not sure about that but, think about it, of all the things we eat and drink, someone somewhere must have tried it first. And as for the tea and coffee thing, did you know that they were originally brewed in milk and not water?

Adam and Eve and their children would have to be the first. And as for why, maybe one of the moms, having watched the calves drink from their mother, decided that it might be an acceptable substitute for human mother's milk. She might have been running a quart low or just too sore and needed a break.

It's not good to drink. Human bodies are not designed to digest another animals milk. Americans have been brainwashed by all those commercials. Most of all, it's actually one of the worst things to give a growing child.

It is strange to think about. We are the only species to drink milk from something other then our own kind. Kinda weird to think about. I wonder about stuff like that all the time. I think some farmer must got pretty thirsty.
