I'm pretty much in the same place you are. I'm 23. My fitness and health was steadily dropping for years, and in the past few months I have been improving, not much. Some is better than none.
For eating I try buying less junk food in genaral, this way I stop the at home binging if ther is nothing to binge on. I am a vegetarian, but if you van't be a vegetarian I suggest that u try eating like one. Aim for foods that are organic. Start reading ingredients and when things get to techinical leave it. If you buy something that is larger than a serving size, seperate it into the servings sizes. When u go to work, school or your going to be out all day pack a lucnh, snack and/or meals for the day. This way you won't be caught off gaurd when you get hungry. Making your own food and snacks is a healthier choice and cheaper.
As for working out. My YMCA has a program called fitlinxx that allows me to monitor my progess through my workout activities, in the gym and out. I started classes one is kickboxing it my favorite form of stress relief for the week, The other is the Body Pump class it has weights and cardio. Don't be afraid of weights the make muscle, which yes weighs more ,but is leaner.
If you use weights, which I strongly suggest, you will probably gain weight but lose inches. So if you start with a weight training I suggest you measure progress by a tape measure and not a scale, but when you start progressing u should use the scale and tape measure. Supposedly when u monitor your weight daily you really pay attention to your weight and that encourages you to workout if it isn't were u want it to be. Don't start watching the scale untill about a month into your program.
I read magazines all the time trying to keep up tp date on information about health and fitness. So ask me questions if you like. I hope everything works out for you. Big Hug! Good Luck!

Staying Motivated
Recognizing and enjoying small successes is one motivator for people who are trying to stick with a resolution. Here are some of the other things that keep readers going: You're Not Alone!
Everyone struggles with staying motivated and reaching their goals. Just look at how many people go on diets, lose weight, and then gain it back again!
The reality is that refocusing, changing, or making a new start on something, no matter how small, is a big deal. But it's not impossible. With the right approach, you can definitely do it

Whoa people! Some of the answers to this just show how much we obsess about our weight.
The first thing, get your head in the right place. There are stress triggers that cause us to find comfort in food. Try to figure out what is stressing you. Yahoo health has a page up for stress.
Also, go to slim fast and get buddies to talk to. The site is amazing and motivational. Not only can you get buddies who are your age and have the same interests, they have meal planners and best of all, it is free!

Well listen in order for you to lose weight you have to make it fun, and you can motivate your self by thinking of what will happen if you do lose weight, you have to convince yourself that losing weight is the best thing you can do to make yourself feel better. You losing weight will motivate your friends to achieve a goal of their own not necessary losing weight, and you losing weight will change the fact that you're single, I'm telling you, you'll get a boyfriend in no time, just don't lose hope, eat vegetables, exercise a lot, don't be ashamed because you are fat, be proud that you are willing to change that.

I'm a 22 year old female who needs motivation to lose weight too. I'm sure there's a ton of us out there! I just want to find a diet or excercise plan that I'll actually STICK to. It's tough. If you live near me maybe we can help motivate each other! :)

OMGAH I LOVE THIS TOPIC. okay so i've had eating problems for the last 2 years and the main thing i do is write down all the calories i've had over the course of a day. i try to stay below 1000 but usually i go over...in that case i exercise. but if thats not the way you want to live. then try looking up victoria beckham pics, lindsay lohan, nicole richie, kate moss...they are all people i look at when i wanna eat... bc theyrre so thin it makes me think .. if i don't eat that i will get as skinny as them. and it works. so that can keep you motivated and insperationed. also look at magazines with hot celebs in them like skinny ones and fat ones and just think... is that piece of cake worth it? is that second serving worth it? you can do this!!

I wish you all the success and let me know how you go. I lost heaps of weight doing this you can too. Committment, dedication and total change of behaviour, it's a big ask and people don't understsand that it is really hard but once you are in the zone you can do this.
If you want to do this it is for life so you need to totally change your way of eating and exercising. This is not a diet rather than a healthy eating plan for life. So no more talking diet cause it means time limit. Stop making some major mistakes wake up earlier and get active earlier your metabolism is sluggish and needs to be woken up this is half your problem.
Here are the golden rules:
Initially cut down to 1200 calories.
Exercise 6 times per week for 1 hours a day. Do three weight sessions and three cardio sessions. No gym involved.
Don't eat carbs after 4pm, never eat carbs within 2 hours of exercise or within 1 hour of exercise.
Drink 3 litres of water per day. You can have a green tea at the end of the day.
Limit your fruit in take to 2 pieces per day.
Never eat dinner after 6pm.
Adopt of low GI eating plan this is sustainable for life!
Make low fat dairy choices
Follow this menu plan as a suggestion:
Breakfast 7am - 1 cup hot water w lemon
20 minutes later have a bowel of oats w water (no honey) OR
fruit salad w low GI soy yogurt
Snack 10am - pear or apple (both low GI)
Lunch 12.30pm - multigrain sandwich w 50g tuna & salad (no butter)
Snack 3pm - low GI yogurt OR skim berry smoothie (no honey or banana) plenty of ice, 1/2 cup skim milk & 1/4 cup yogurt
Dinner 5.30pm - 120g grilled lean meat/fish/prawns/tofu patties (not fried) w spinach salad & mixed vegies (no whites, carbs) OR 3 egg white/soy omlette with ham, cheese and tomato
Snack - 1 scoop of low cal low fat ice cream (if hungry)
Exercise is must be intense. Refer to www.bodybuilding.com for your weights routine. Never do weights two consecutive days have a cardio day in between.
Cardio needs to include running, go hard up stair wells and cycling. You get the most benefits from exercise when your body is totally fatigued and this is when you see changes.
To maintain you can increase calories to 1500 and reduce exercise sessions to 3-4 times per week. If weight creeps up again due to holiday period etc.. go back to 1200 cal and 6 sessions again.
Good luck it worked for me it can work for anyone.

I have lost over 150lbs and kept it off by eating the right portions and basically following the food pyramid. I joined a local diet center as well as going to a nutritionist and the information was the same. A healthy diet as well as portion control and exercise, for more information visit my group at
