I believe it is that jam has pieces of real fruit in it, or that it has a chunky texture. While jelly is very smooth without pieces of fruit.

jelly is not as thick as jam it's like jam has to be set up as it has know geletin added.

jam is pure fruits it is made of sugar and fruits only but jelly it is fruits with gelatin added to it.
