I don't think they ever did...and that's too bad.I understand the differing opinions, but we all are put on this Earth to love one another. Granted,we as Christians, are to spread the word of God,but that doesn't mean to try and force our belief on another. Most that know me,know me as a good Catholic man.I tell others,if asked, what God means to me,what He has done for me. I plant the seed of faith in their minds, but beyond that..it's up to the individual. It's called Free Will and everyone has it.

Atheists will not respect Christians because they are frightened, ignorant people
Christians will not respect atheists because they are stubborn, short-sighted people.
If I had to place a bet, I'd say atheists will eventually win the argument. While I believe there may be a greater force in the universe that drives existance (something that most atheists would deny), the explanation of life and death provided by the Christian faith is clearly fashioned by human minds. The role of "God" as judge and ruler come from mankind's role of powerful leaders. It is obviously not based on observation or experience. They needed to imagine what God was like, so they used ideas from their own world. 2000 years later, the ideas are archaic, so Christians are left defending their explanations of God using ancient images and concepts. Modern people find it weird and a little funny, so atheists (despite being short-sighted) come out sounding more reasonable. As time goes on, the Christian descriptions of God will sound more and more antiquated. Hence, in the long run, atheists will have the edge.

As a Christian, I do respect atheists (as well as others who hold differing views). I am convinced the "heat" that is being generated is the result of the diametrically opposed starting points. Neither position can be compromised without loosing its position, when all is said and done. That is, just as atheists cannot admit to the existance of any supernatural event or being, nether can a Christian, if consistent, admit the existance of only the natural. The problem boils down, very often, to whether one is willing to honestly examine the evidence with the sole intent of determining which belief system is credible based on the evidence, logic, experience and a system by which to examine all of these facets and more to reach a reasonable conclusion. Sadly, when believers of these two polar opposites meet, it seems there is an instant exchange of Heat rather than light.
I am convinced of the position of the Christian who believes the Bible is the basis for all interpretation of logic, history, scientific fact (not opinion, personal preferences or conjecture), information system laws, statistics, personal conduct, social relationships, and many more fields of true science is on solid ground for a rewarding and eternal life style. This by only starting with allowing a supernatural dimension ( which scientists are beginning to allow due to evidence they see) and testing to see if it does fit reality
Of course, if you believe that there is no such thing as truth, absolutes or reality, forget the whole thing; there is no longer a foundation for discussion

Hey! A great question, and one that poses more questions than answers. Mutual respect vs. dehumanization and demonization...an issue in every aspect of civil discourse these days. The Christians I respect are not the proselytizers and fanatics abounding in Answers; I respect the quiet ones who live what they believe and leave everyone else to go to hell their own way. The atheists I respect are not the silly ones trying to get "In God We Trust" off our money (like that's ever going to happen!); I respect atheists who bravely soldier on through life with no expectation of heavenly reward, and who still do good for their fellow human beings.

Well Christians believe atheists are going to hell. So atheists don't really matter...atheists are trash to Christians, sure you can recycle it, but sometimes there are things you can like Styrofoam.
Atheists hate Christians because Christians think of them as trash. It's hard to like someone who constantly says you should suffer forever and that you are not a nice person.
These two groups have never gotten along...mostly because the Christians accidental mistook several thousand atheists for wood and burnt them.

Christians don't trust Athiests. Just plain ignorance.
A 2006 study by researchers at the University of Minnesota involving a poll of 2,000 households in the United States found atheists to be the most distrusted of minorities, more distrusted than Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians, and other groups. Many of the respondents associated atheism with immorality, including criminal behavior, extreme materialism, and elitism.

Because most atheists behave like they are superior to Christians. True Christians respect everyone, for a true Christian doesn't judge his neighbors.
Unfortunately, some people name themselves Christians, but don't follow God's teachings.

No. I suppose you are not amazed by that, right?
The righteous try to convert the pagans in any religion and always have. And I am not limiting that to Christians obviously. The only major religion I know that does not do that I have noticed is Buddhist. You ever heard of a Buddhist missionary?

Christians are to love everyone. Just because we know atheists are wrong doesn't mean we don't respect them as God's children.
