They can be called Americans. But if you're from North America, you are called North American. If you're from South America, you're called South American. The problem is that people from the U.S.A. are called American because the word "America" is in the name and that's all they can be called. Many people from South America like to be called "American" though because they are from South America. So, they are called Americans, but it's much less confusing to call some Canadian or Brazilian because then you won't confuse them with Americans from the U.S.A. as Americans from the U.S.A. have no other noun to describe the nation from which they originate.

Europeans are indeed from Europe. Asians live in Asia. North Americans live on the continent of North America. South Americans reside in South America. Central Americans live in Central America. Africans call Africa their home. All of these "continental residers" are named after their continents.
People from the country, the United States of America are called Americans in the same manner that people from the Republic of Korea are called Koreans.

America and India are the ony two countries that are named after the continents in which they reside. So, for the USA in North America, it only makes sence to call all residents Americans, because they've got the name twice. Its a convention that has been used so long, that it makes more sence to leave it as is, than to change it.

Besides, if you call a Canadian and American, you might get yourself hurt.

We could go for North Americans. United Staters is a mouthful and just sounds wrong. We dominate this hemisphere, so we call ourselves Americans.

I think that people from the United States are called "Americans" just because we can't make any other good name out of the name of our country. "United States-ians" just doesn't have the same ring.

Mexicans, Peruvians, Canadians, and so forth don't have the same problem.
