Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and click the Show Updates Box then scroll down to where you see Windows Media Player 10 and click the Change/Remove box next to it. It will then give you a warning that if you remove it, it will revert back to the previous version, go ahead and Media Player 9 should be restored.

First of all Service Pack 3 for Windows XP hasn't been released yet so are you running a beta?
MP10 is installed with Service Pack 2, as an upgrade or from stand alone distribution. Uninstalling it via whatever method was used to install it in the first place is the only way.
You can of course delete the files (C:\Program Files\wmplayer), correct all the broken registry entries and then install WM9 if you can find a copy but I really wouldn't recommend it. You'll have no end of trouble.
Might be a better idea to turn of the visualisations and find the most recent versions of any codecs.
