Are you sure it's sumac and not the tree of heaven?

Could you post a picture?

If they are really that tall, you will have a hard time applying the foliar herbicides I recommended in the last question. You may need to call a professional herbicide applicator who can treat the stems with "garlon."

It depends on which kind of sumac you are talking about. Do you live in NE/Mid Atl.Mid West US? There is a common shrub/clump tree known to be weedy that grows all over. Sumas is from the genus Rhus, which also includes poison ivy and poison sumac, but I am sure that is not what you are refering to.

There are also desirable sumacs used in the landscape, and they are most commonly planted in the mid-west, though not ruled out for the northeast. They do no prefer the warmer climates, in general.

If you are talking about the weedy type, and I am guessing you really want to know because you are considering pulling them out rather than cutting them down (which is a very good choice to completely irradicate them from your landscape, then we are talking about 1" of strong roots, with runners and suckers. Make sure you get everythoing out, or you will have a nice new crop of young sumac following up your removal, although a little persistent weeding will take care of that.

How tall is the tree? You can tell how the roots of a tree are by looking at the tree itself. Roots memic the tree branches. So if you want to know how a trees roots look stand back and look at the tree.
