Animals do have 6 senses as some humans do. What makes them different then humans is that there not blinded by the world views of ghosts. If you notice babies and children can also pick things up cause there pure and there still not tainted by people. So they see things as they are and as they grow older that slowly fades. Because they start to close off. But animals will never you can't tell a dog a ghost doesn't exist so it never looses that inpurity. So yes your dog did see something. And it's probably why it was frightened. Hell I would be too. Someone he didn't recognize or something. And if you want to be with Bettie you have to learn to open your senses.
*Note: After reading the last word of your sentence I heard something usual. Thanks I just freaked out*

I'm not sure if this is a sixth sense, or if there is a scientific explanation, but in the minutes leading up to a natural disaster such as an earthquake or tornado, birds and animals know to take refuge. And that's usually before us humans - with all our modern technology - realise what's about to happen.
This probably isn't relevant to what you're asking, but at the last eclipse of the sun, some animals were reported to be panic-stricken.

Some animals have different senses. Plants can sense light and gravity without eyes or feeling. Sharks can sense electrical disturbances. I'm positive there are a wide variety of fully explainable senses in the animal kingdom we have no idea about.

How come animals can sense ghosts/spirits before we can?
Because they don't know any better. By that I mean they don't know weather it's possible or not, they just do it.
Did you also know that when there was that big title wave a couple of years back that there was a zoo (I don't currently remember the name) where ALL the animals ran to the highest ground while the zoo keepers watched in confusion. All the animals survived, but many of the zoo keepers drowned.

Oh I love this question!
I am in school for Electro Neuro Diagnostics, and recently in class, we were taught about how there are certain dogs that can sense the onset of a seizure! They are given to people with epilepsy, much like seeing eye dogs are given to blind people.
Please see this article for some fascinating information...
http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/epilepsyusa/aboutseizuredogs.cfm
"The dogs he was training were sometimes able to give warning as much as 15 to 45 minutes before the actual seizure occurred. The way the dogs behaved took different forms, from pawing in a special way to simply approaching the person and barking." - Dr. Stephen W. Brown, British neuropsychiatrist and epilepsy specialist
Amazing!
Peace!

Its the animal instincts, they can detect any uneven changes in the atmosphere. They can predict earthquakes, tsunami etc because nature has created them in a way in which they sense the danger well in advance. It may be the sixth sense, but i think the researchers can tell the exact reason for this than us.

Yes, they have a sixth sense, but not in the way humans understand or interpret a sixth sense to be.

One interesting fact came out of the tsunami disaster - the possible verification of something most of us already knew, animals have a 6th sense 'esp'ecially in the face of disaster

yes, like the other answers, dogs and cats (I am unsure about other animals and hesitant in finding out) can sense natural distasters, but also illnesses like cancer and when an eplileptic fit is going to take place.....wow..
so, with that logic, I am sure dogs and cats can see spirits.
