Mr Bacclus, and Thunder2sys, what language do you think that nations use to write their constitutions, law, treaties and other government documents? The language of the United States existed long before you were born!
Check out all American documents, and American history.
Check and see if Japan has a document saying Japanese is their official language or Russia, Denmark, Italy or France.
What language is used when our government issues a passport?
If someone requests to be allowed to immigrate to America, then they should learn our language, know something about our government, and serve in our armed services. Otherwise, why should they want to come to this country?
No one has to write a law that says water is wet, just get into it.

What passed was a determination to use English in writing laws, etc. It wasn't a requirement that ordinary people have to use it. Many states have adopted English as their 'official language' but it doesn't necessarily mean much. California is one of them, from what I understand.

Yes. English is the official language of the USA. Doesn't mean you are forced to speak it. Its not a law. It means basically that all government business will be conducted in English, but the private sector can do what they please.

America does not have a national language. English is the common language and most often used. But we do not have a national language.
