It's not hype. They are breaking the law to be here illegally. And breaking the law makes one a criminal, and what is worse this is also a matter of national security. How many sleeper terrorists have come in this way? The use fake or stolen ID and SS numbers. This could cause problems for the real person. Think of how it would look when you file your tax return and the IRS computers kick out the information that you did file the paperwork for "your" other job on the other side of the country. Can you see the big mess here? What they are doing is called identity theft, another crime. Many of them work for below minimum wage and there is no taxes paid on them (their fault and the fault of the person who hires them). They use ALL of our benefits and drain ALL of our resources. They default on payments on many things, hospital bills, loans, etc. and because they aren't in the system and not legally here you can't go after them. Then there are the health issues involved. How do you know what diseases of illnesses these people that are here illegally have? How many of the may have things like TB, cholera, or even worse and are spreading it?

Then when you stand up for your rights and the enforcing of the law they scream things like racist, bigot, etc. As well as claims that being illegals are not criminals. They are too stupid to comprehend the meaning of the word ILLEGAL. Being here illegally DOES make them a criminal. And whenever the government talks about clamping down on illegally immigration they start throwing a fit about it. Well since this isn't their country and since they are here illegally, they have NO say in anything.

Are you kidding??? Work long hours doing awful work that no one wants to do, for less than minimum wage, no benefits, no guarantees of minimum health and safety standards in the hope that your kids might have a better life. Don't you wish it was you?

Try working an 18-hour shift in 90-110 degree heat picking produce for the Americans who hate you and want you out of their country and see how wonderful the "free ride" is. Now do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, for a pathetic amount of pay and no benefits at all. But don't get sick or exhausted, as you are easily replaced with another of "your kind". Don't you feel so lucky to have jumped on this free ride?

If you are beaten, robbed, or raped, you can do nothing, because it will end in your deportation and possibly the end of your hopes for a better future for your kids. God knows what--if anything--will happen to the criminals who hurt you. But you deserve whatever happens to you, since you are a criminal in that you came to the US illegally in order to find work and feed your kids. If you want a "free ride", expect to be hurt and expect no sympathy.

If you get sick, you can do nothing, because it could end in your deportation or losing the crappy job you so desperately need. So you get up each day and still go work the long hours in spite of illness or injury. What choice do you have? Ah, the cushy luxury of the "free ride" in the US. Who wouldn't desire it?

Your kids walk to school, and usually you accompany them on the walk because you fear that they could be abducted or come in contact with something that will bring harm to them. But now you have to stay home and send them alone, hoping that they won't be hurt, because if you are out and questioned by one of the new "task forces", you'll be deported, and then your kids won't have you at all. Don't you just wish it was you?

I am sure many of the politicians who are now speaking against undocumented workers have employed such persons as nannies, gardeners, laborers in the past. I wish someone would do some research on this and publish what is certain to be yet another example of the sickening hypocrisy on Capitol Hill.

Several people have mentioned the enormous health care costs for treating illegal immigrants. Is the problem that they are undocumented, or that they are uninsured? And do they cost any more than American citizens who are uninsured? Also note that the standard way of dealing with nonpayment in hospitals, clinics, and also in many areas other than health care is to increase the fees attached to the bill, also charging compounded interest, so that the bill increases exponentially over time. If someone can't afford to pay a few hundred dollars in a lump sum, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status, doesn't it make more sense to allow reasonable payments instead of demanding more and more money?

Several people here are focusing on the costs of illegal immigrants, but I don't see any mention of the money they spend in the US, or the money they save companies who employ them (lower wages, no benefits, no workman's comp, etc.). How does the equation balance out?

There seems to be an idea that everyone who enters the US without proper documentation is a vampire who sucks everything they can out of the US system while leaving behind a trail of destruction. That's really a ridiculous generalization, and I think that if you meet people from Mexico, and from anywhere else in the world for that matter, you'll find that they are just trying to make a reasonably good life for their kids. Is that so different from what Americans strive for?

How many of you would be where you are today, doing what you are doing today, if your parents, grandparents, and greatgrandparents, and other ancestors hadn't worked hard and sacrificed and done things they wished they didn't have to do so that you and your children could have better lives? How many of you would even be in the US today? How many of you would even be alive today??? And yet you fault others for doing the same for their kids, even if it doesn't affect you?

PS: I am a US citizen, as were my ancestors, going back several generations. They immigrated to the US from Luxumbourg, Germany, and England...no idea of whether it was "legally" or "illegally".

It's NOT hype. It is true. Some hospitals are going bankrupt because of so many of them getting free health care and most of the time, they ALWAYS have so many kids because they don't have the common sense to use birth control. They also get food stamps and with their huge families, that is quite substantial. They are a real burden to the country. I wish we could get them out of here. Not to mention the fact that they always have so many IDs and aliases. Their entire lives seem to be one big lie and THEY DON'T PAY TAXES. Since they don't pay taxes, they should not get anything free.

They get a free ride, that fact is 'documented'.

According to TNRIP, the financial cost of this foreign invasion to U.S. taxpayers is staggering! Here is a break down of the annual costs:

Education: $22.5 billion
Bi-lingual Education: $3.3 billion
AFDC: $2.4 billion
SSI: $2.9 billion
Social Security: $24.8 billion
Housing Assistance: $2.6 billion
Criminal Justice: $2.6 billion
Jobs Lost by Americans: $10.8 billion
Other Programs: $51.4 billion
Food Stamps: $7 billion
Health Care: $1.4 billion (That Totals $131.7 BILLION Annually Folks)

It doesn't matter how people came here in the PAST! NOW, today, 2006, the USA has LAWS that state you MUST have legal documentation to enter this country. With the threat of terrorism we need to ENFORCE the LAWS, STOP illegal immigration and TIGHTEN up on legal immigration.

I have NO PITY for illegal immigrants who come to the USA ILLEGALLY, work low paying jobs and have that pay supplemented by MY taxes!! They get their health taken care of in hospital ER's, the HOSPITALS have to bear the costs susbsequently 100's of great hospitals have had to shut down due to the influx of illegal immigrants, mostly from across the border with Mexico!!

I don't even want to get started. $18,000 is the cost to educate one child for one year in California. They don't pay that even if they pay all taxes. Meanwhile schools are overcrowded and underfunded and ESL requirements place special burdens on the schools.

There have been a ton of studies on this. Poor illegals (even if they pay all taxes) are a major economic detriment and are an overwhelming impact in areas where they concentrate.

Illegals are killing us financially. The get aid in many ways, and DO NOT pay taxes except sales tax. To add insult to injury, they often send money back to their native countries putting an additional strain on our economy.

It depends on where you are from. It appears that illegals from Mexico can get jobs, social security cards, get welfare, and send large chunks of their money back to mexico (Which is why President Fox from Mexico doesn't mind his citizens coming to the US) and get away with it. This is not true if you come from other countries.

It's NOT all hype!!!! I have SEEN it happen!!! I know they could get food stamps,low-income housing,AFDC,WIC and free medical, until LAST year in my state, until we passed prop200!!! They were considered "migrant" workers, and they QUALIFIED for ALL these benefits because of that!!!!! I worked in the post office, and used to have them sign for food stamps, and put their checks in their P.O. boxes!!
I have SEEN them abuse our system!! I do not KNOW how MANY i have seen come here, with the woman pregnant,(OF COURSE),pop out the kid,and they ALL get to STAY because of their "anchor" kids!!
