If you're carrying extra weight then you need to burn off the fat, jogging/running is best for this so treadmill. Then you need to do exercises aimed at abdominal and core muscles. Basic curl up or crunch for upper abs, reverse curl for lower abs, oblique curls for obliques (side of stomach and waist). You can use an ab roller for all of these if you find it helps, but technique is the most important thing 10 good ones are better than 100 bad ones. You really need to exercise the whole of your stomach area plain old sit ups just don't cut it I'm afraid. Rowing also uses your abs so a rowing machine would help also.

First, any exercise routine has to all encompassing, meaning that you have you to look at present health, nutrition and your personal routine. For the Abdominal region I would utelize a number of exercises designed to focus and rotate the development. Minimal caloric intake, high water intake and the following exercises. 1. Ab-Roller ( a wheel with handles on both sides that you stretch out and come back while on your knees ), 2. bent leg twisting sit-ups. 3. V-ups ( while lying on your back raise your straight legs up to meet your straight upper body ). 4. Hanging crunches ( grab a pole that will lift you off the ground and hang, raise your knees to your chest. This routine will be hard for the novice. I suggest everyone consult their family Doctor before starting any exercise routine.
