War is the last resort. Every effort should be made to settle differences peacefully.

Honestly you're asking a pretty loaded question here. Some wars are good and justified, while others are not good.

I just read an excellent book on the theory of Just War, and I highly recommend it to you because it might give you some help with your assignment.

Just War Against Terror - Jean Bethke Elshtain
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465019102/104-7257970-1539112?v=glance&n=283155

I'm sure you can also find it in your local book store as well.
The book focuses on the reasons why the War on Terrorism, and US intervention in the world continues to be necessary. Also it outlines years of Just War theory for the reader as well.

General Sherman probably summed it up the best when he marched his army through Georgia during the Civil War. To paraphrase his quote = Make the war so miserable for the people, they'll never want to have another one.

There are no winners in war, each side will lose soldiers in battles. Their loved ones will suffer and grieve and many will carry emotional scars for the rest of their lives.

It doesn't matter who's wrong
It doesn't matter who's right
The only thing that matters is who's going to be left? And what will they be left with?

war is not good not on any level, someone above answered that good things come of war eg. advancement of technology and increased feeling of patriotism, advancement of technology usually involves making better and faster killing machines which is not good and nationalism breeds racism which obviosly is not good, to prove this point look at what is happening in america right now, there was a lot of nationalism generated after 9-11, the wars in iraq and afganistan gave the american people a feeling of doing good in the world, made them proud to be american but now that we have all woke up and started thinking "hey why are our troops dying over there was the war all that good really, did we need it" there is a lot of spare nationalism going about, the feeling is still there but there is nowhere to focus it so it has been focused on the immagrents. the easiest way for you to answer your question is to ask yourself "is it good for people to die on a mass scale" should be an eay one to answer, war is sometimes required as a means to defend ones self like world war 2, but it is never good

It depends on your point of view, and the reasons for going to war. Some people will always be against using war to solve our problems, others will be all for it. If somebody went to war for someone pushing him, that would be a bad war. Although, if someone went to war to save someone, help someone (the cold war), that could be a good war. Also, things can change that turn a good war into a bad war, like, to save the people you want to save you end up killing or hurting more people in the process. It all comes down to what you think, though. Good luck on your assignment!!

It depends on why the war is, Romans considered war as a venture for profit, most wars have strong monetary economic overtones. very few are fought on the basis of morality and those usually are lost. War is serious business. my emphasis on business. Not a lot of sense in wars that cost more than they are worth, if you end up bankrupt. the war in the middle east is for control of the whole worlds oil supply, a very great prize, but may cause conflict with India and China as they are large economies growing at a blistering rate of speed and in desperate need of oil

Wars are good when you are there to liberate and protect people from tyranny. For example, the people of Iraq were being viciously brutalized by their leader and his sons. This leaders was slaughtering thousands of his own people. This leader wanted to spread this tyranny throughout the middle east. So the coalition has gone in to ensure that the people of this country have a right to "BE". So in this case war is good.

If you're not on the receiving end, if you don't have to fight it or live through it, I suppose.

Is war good? What does this mean? Is war good (like peace, happiness, joy are good?--obviously not). Is war good for anything? Well, Amerca would not be prosperous without its many, many wars. Is that good? Is it good to make Americans rich through war, even if it means terror and horror for other people?

Maybe you are asking, are there good wars? The answer is still no. Maybe there are necessary wars, wars of self-defense.

No but they're inevitable. Also, war is what brings a nation together to fight for one cause and makes the people stronger in and of themselves. Look at the Border Barbarian pattern in history. Small Nation protected from barbarians by their "BORDER BARBARIANS" and in not fighting, they grow weak and the border barbarians grow strong. Eventually the border barbarians conquer the interior country.
