The important question to ask is what is the right blood pressure for you. And the answer is the context it is occuring. First off the reason why we want to control blood pressure is because hypertension can increase your risk of heart disease. With cardiac disease and death being a major problem, managing and controlling hypertension can lower you risk of cardiac morbidity and mortality.

Secondly, a person's other medical problems and risk factors (family hx, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes) gives us an idea how high your blood pressure should be. For instance, a person with a previous heart attack may actually want their blood pressure even lower then 120/80. If you have diabetes, some physician want your blood pressure closer to 110/70. Remember the less harder a heart has to work the longer the heart can continue to pump. In a completely normal person with no cardiac disease and no risk factors for heart disease, a blood pressure of 140/90 or less may be appropiate.

So if you are a completely normal person (no heart or risk factors) and your blood pressure is 135/85, is that an okay blood pressure? Intuitively, a blood pressure of <120/80 probably is better than 135/85 - I don't know if there is research to proof this claim but it makes sense. But the problem is that if you are completely health and normal are you willing to take medication regularly and accept the potential side effects of the medication. For me personally, if you are healthy and your blood pressure is less than 140/90, I would not treat it.

BP standards have changed over the years. The lower reading should not exceed 90 and upper systolic 120. Previously, the elevation of the systolic in older people was written off as hardening of the arteries and not treated but now it is. Watch salt intake and use your BP medicine as prescribed.

Normal blood pressure is 140/90 mm of Hg. 140 stands for systolic blood pressure and 90 stands for diastolic blood pressure. Please test your blood for Blood sugar, Cholesterol Profile (LDL,HDL, Triglycerides etc.) Since you are aged 52, please reduce sugar and oil contents in the diet.
