At your rate, I'm not sure what you will be able to afford off base (I was non-com). The area is great, with all sorts of things to do. Best weather in the world. San Diego is close (approx 40 miles) and it's a great town. There are LOT's of us jarheads around, but they won't be TOO mean to a squid officer, so don't be afraid. Be calm, we can sense fear. On base housing is OK, I would say a little better than average. The surrounding area makes up for any deficiencies though. Cost of living is higher than most places . I can't speak to it extensively. I was enlisted and spent a lot of time in the fleet on floats. The bulk of my experience off base when not deployed was in establishments that served "adult beverages".

as on O3, your BAH will be decent.. BUT Housing up around Pendleton is hard to come by. Many people live down in San Diego. Only problem with THAT is.. BAH for Pendleton is a fair bit LESS than BAH for SD(which is barely enough to cover decent housing down there unless you live near the border)

SITES is a good place to start.

Pros: You are in So. Cal the best place in the world (population proves it) Off post housing BAH is goooood and you can easily afford beach front property or at least close to it.
Cons: It sounds like your married (way to tempting place to be married) be strong! Oh almost forgot another con...ITS FULL OF MARINES.lol

I don't think you can afford to live off base. Th ebase is close to the freeway so you can travel easy your close to san diego which is nice and mexico if you dare go. You also have several state parks near by and lots of beaches.
