each of the "a" articles might want to were replaced to "the" so this is extra of a series (i.e the cat on the mouse the dogs on the cat the tiger ate the dogs etc.) in the different case they're purely random animals eating different random animals. So pondering the context the cat would not be eaten by the different animal notwithstanding the can did eat the mouse and cats commonly kill their prey. So. No, the mouse is lifeless.
