Why is it that most people look at vegetarians like they are weirdos but don't even think twice when someone says they hate vegetables???? I don't get it!

It seems that people automatically go on the defensive because they assume you think eating meat is bad and therefore they are bad.

I think people know deep in their hearts that it causes unnecessary suffering and severe environmental damage to dine on dead flesh and your eating preference reminds them of that.

If you don't want people to freak and interrogate you then don't call yourself a vegetarian. Don't even bring it up. If it does come up just say it sideways and don't talk down to people. I just say that one day I walked into a grocery store and looked at the shrink-wrapped steaks and realized that it was a cop out for me to eat a cow because I could never kill a cow with my own hands. I say I eat fish because I can kill a fish no problem. They seem to respect that.

Depends on where you are from. North Americans are big carnivores hostorically....as are many european societies...but in India it would be the opposite. So it is just the expectation of the city that you live in as well as how open the city is to people with alternative lifesyles. Some cities are more responsive to vegetarianism...like madison wisconsin is a very vegetarian city and I imagine that Portland Oregon is the same. If it bothers you a lot I say move.

Some people think that it is unnatural to be a vegetarian. They don't think that it is right that they don't eat meat. Because you are missing out on essential proteins and what not. I however don't care...what people eat is their business...not mine. Some people just don't like the taste of meat at all. To each their own.

All those people who hate vegetables are probably pretty unhealthy. I suppose that modern society dictates that we are permitted to hate vegetables, but it is to be considered 'weird' if we hate eating dead animals.
