Here ya go (in case you can't find a restaurant there) -- from a New Mexican -- Enjoy.
SOPAPILLA MIX
4 c. flour
3/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. shortening
1 c. warm water
Thoroughly mix dry ingredients; add shortening and mix until it is thoroughly dissolved. Slowly add about 1 cup warm water and kneed until smooth. Dough is a little stiffer than pie dough. Cover with damp cloth and let rise 1 hour.
For cooking: Roll out very thin and cut in rectangular strips about 3 x 4 inches. Cook in deep fat, oil, or shortening, turning until golden brown. Serve hot with butter and honey.
If they don't puff while cooking, oil is not hot enough or dough is not rolled thin enough.

Man I haven't had those in a long time...I live in the Bay Area & the few Mexican Rest. I've been to didn't have them. But at the same time not everyone makes them good. & there's Mexican food tht I grew up w/ in South Texas near the border, tht people over here don't even know what they are. Like Carne Gusada or Pan de Polvo.

I know what they are....I have eaten them in Mexican Restaurants before, I don't know where you can get them where you are..SORRY! But......we have made the same thing at home...(they just don't look the same, but they taste the same!) Get some cheap can biscuits....cut them in half.....fry them in your deep fryer (when you oil is hot!) for about 2-3 mins.....til golden brown....get you some butter & honey and ENJOY!!!!!!
Hope this helps!

I live in Vegas and still have not found anyone that makes them as good as back in Texas. There is this place that makes them so light and airy and then you put some honey in them....MMMMM!
