Put it in a paper bag with a ripe banana for a couple of days, dont refrigerate and it will ripen quickly.
If I have been in a hurry for one to ripen, I cut it in half, remove the seed and microwave it on low power for 10 seconds. Repeat until the avocado is soft enough to use.

I put them in a paper bag and put them on top of the refrigerator, just like you would with pears. They ripen within about a day or two.
