I have just purchased a Acan barcode scanner to attach to my pc to scan barcodes into amazon, it seems to work ok as it beeps when it scans but the number does not appear on the screen, also I have tried to scan it into notepad but that does'nt work either. Does anybody know where I'm going wrong?

It is a usb connection, there was no software with it, but I was told it was "pre-programmed for the popular scan & press return settings". Should the numbers appear on screen ok then when I scan a barcode?

Hi, I got it working now guys, I just disconnected the usb converter and plugged the ps/2 cable directly into the keyboard port, and......it worked. Thanks for all your help.

Is your scanner a PS2 connection scanner? if yes, make sure it is connected to only the keyboard PS2 and not the mouse one.
If you have check and it is correct. You can try reset the handheld scanner. Normally if you have the manual. You can find a reset bar code. Scan it and you will heard some feedback from the scanner.
(try a couple of different bar code to verify the error)
After resetting, and still won't work.
Then i guess you have a faulty unit. Send then back for repair. But before that, perhaps you can try on another PC to eliminate PC connection problem.

You need the scanning programming barcodes - usually one will enter the scanner into programming mode, others to set parameters (for comms settings etc). It's a case of scanning each barcode just as you might choose an option from a menu, the scanner will usually make a special beepy beep to tell you it's working in setup mode.
You might be able to download the barcodes from somewhere and print them out. That's one method anyway, some others may be programmable from the computer but that only works if the comms settings are right.
New:: USB is out of my league, I never worked on those. Presumably you need the software that goes with it, check the manufacturers website or search the web for clues. Barcodes will only come up on the screen if the software that drives the scanner is running and you have some sort of comms software or POS program running too.

You didn't specify the model number of your scanner.
I did a little searching and all the scanners I found DID include software and drivers for the scanner.
I suggest you check any paperwork, manuals, etc that came with your scanner for Acan's website for downloadable drivers & software.

The device should emulate a USB keyboard and therefore needs no drivers or software as it will enter the barcode information as if you were typing it on a USB keyboard.
If it's not working, it's likely defective, simply return it.
