Hi. I have had diabetes since I was 9 and I am 35 now. That is a lot of shots, since I have to take them 3 times a day. I alternate my injection site every time to decrease scar tissue and tissue damage, and to minimize pain. I use my upper arm, back of my arms, legs, stomach, and both butt cheeks. Since I am right handed it is easier to take the injection in my left cheek, but I still manage to use both sides. I keep the injections in my butt higher up but have used a lot of the general area. I have never had any problems of any sort when using my backside for injections. The buttock is listed in most literature as one of many possible and safe injection sites. There are many great books, Internet sites, and magazines out today that you might be interested in. You can find some good information on any Diabetes issues you may have. Of course, you can always speak to your physician if you are having a lot of pain or are concerned about causing yourself problems. Check out this article and look around the site. Hope this helps. http://www.bddiabetes.com/us/yourinsulin/howto_injection.asp

The stomach is supposed to hurt the least and it has the most even absorption rate. The legs are second best, and then the arms. The butt isn't a good place to do it, because there are major vessels and nerves running through there and you don't want to hit one by mistake.
The best way to do it is to find the places that are easiest for you and then rotate where you give it so that you don't overuse just one spot.

I don't recall ever seeing any nurses where I work give an insulin shot anywhere other than the legs or the stomach. What does your doc suggest?

When I was on shots I always preferred thighs, abdomen, and sides of my stomach. Arms and butt always hurt too much to use.

That's where i put my pump infusions and it doesn't hurt. I'd try it. My grandma does it and she's old so i bet you could.

You said you have a fat *** so it probably will not hurt if you shoot yourself there.
