A quick way to check is to use your mother's glucometer and quickly check you finger stick glucose.
Fast overnight and check it in the morning. If its above 126, you should go to your doctor and some blood work done. The other criteria is a casual blood sugar (a blood sugar at any point of the day irregardless of meal) of 200 or more. By the way, people with sugars between 126 and 200 usually are asymptomatic. Diabetics start to urinate alot and drink more when their glucose is above 200.

Being very thirsty and peeing alot are telltale signs of the onset of Diabetes. You might also be feeling tired all the time. Given the fact that you have Diabetes in your family history I would run (not walk) to get this checked out.
Just for the record you don't have to be fat to have or get Diabetes. Diabetes is caused by a malfunction of the pancreas. The pancreas manufactures and distributes Insulin into the bloodstream to keep blood sugar levels in check. You have symptoms of hyperglycemia, which basically means that your pancreas isn't supplying enough Insulin to keep your blood sugar at an acceptable level.

Get your symptoms evaluated by a medical doctor. Type II diabetes is normally controllable with prudent health care. It's your choice whether you wish to go on drug therapy or drugless therapy.
If you are interested in natural cures, (if you are confirmed diabetic), please take the following steps:-
1. Practise the Sun Salutation everyday(do check out free yoga resources on the web)
2. Minimise your intake of refined sugars(sucrose). Replace your sugar intake with honey (but not much either as blood sugar is affected the same way). Also, replace white bread with wholemeal bread or brown rice.Eat more greens.
3. Monitor your blood glucose everyday if possible.
4. Consume the herb ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi) or shiitake.Studies have proven the effectiveness of medicinal mushrooms in combating many degenerative diseases. Bitter gourd is a traditional remedy for hyperglycemia or diabetes mellitus.

No, listen to me.
I think that you're probably just a little paranoid because of your family history. You probably do not have it, unless you have to pee like, every 15 minutes and you are always thirsty-- and drinking doesn't help it.
Also, are you tired a lot? Do your extremities get numb, itchy? If you're really worried, ask someone to smell your breath. If it smells fruity, then that may be a problem.
Explain how you have worries to your mother, who will obviously understand because she has it. Have her take you to a doctor, and remember-- even if you do have it, it's not the end of the world.
Good luck.

I'm a diabetic. The best advice/answer that I can give you is to get it under control as soon as possible. There was no one in my family that had it before, it was my lifestyle is the way I caught it. I test myself, i take oral medication. Once you get used to doing all that, its a breeze. I let it go unchecked for many years after I knew I had it and now I have problems with my feet that I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I go through, its very pain full. Go see your MD and find out.

You need to go to the doctor and get tested. It doesn't hurt, just a blood test. Sometimes you can even get this free. My stepson just found out he has diabetes and he is only 23. Go as soon as you can so you can get the information you need to get it in control. You will feel a lot better.

Check your blood glucose first. And then we'll see. Diabetes is famillial, it becomes an ice mountain. Our life style also had it influence such as eat fast food & less exercise. If you're familial you can choose a healthy lifestyle. Maybe it can avoid you from diabetes. Good luck.

That's a very common symptom, and it is hereditary, so get checked right away. Don't panic because your grandfather died of it--if you stick to a good plan of diet, exercise, and the medication your doctor prescribes, you should be able to live a fairly normal life.
