I have 2 9 week old kittens that I've raised for the last 7 weeks. Both were eating fine and all of a sudden, a week ago the female started refusing all food. Every bite I get down her is a struggle. She's seen the vet as recently as the 27th for her shots, and I did mention this but the problem is getting worse. Her brother is very small for his age, but eats well and is now 1 lb 9 oz. She is down to 1 lb. I've tried various canned kitten foods, such as Science Diet, Sophisticat, Friskies, regular adult canned foods such as Fancy Feast, Whiskers, and Science Diet dry kitten food; canned tuna in water... you name it, I've tried it (including the human baby food meats). I'm giving her a little nutri-cal on my finger each day, to try to keep her blood sugar up. She refuses KMR and table food. ANY ideas???

I do foster care for the Humane Society and I've never run into this before! I'm really worried about her. She is failing.

I took the kitten to my vet on 7/3 and they did a fecal test and found no parasites; did blood work to check for anemia and hypoglycemia, checked her kidney's for creantine and BUN # and also checked for high level of bile and found nothing. As a last resort we also rechecked her for FeLV and FIV and she was still negative. At a loss to explain her failure, the vet checked her temp, her heart, felt her tummy for lumps, etc and everything seemed normal. They put her on amoxicillian 2x day and flagyl for her diarrhea and today I have a different kitten. She has eaten 6 times today, very healthy amounts, has not thrown up and actually has energy to play. AMAZING what 24 hours can do! We have no idea what the problem was, but obviously, there was a problem. She weighed 1 lb 3 oz yesterday and today she she weighs 1 lb 5 1/2 oz.

most likely a simple upper respiratory infection. when a cat is congested and sinuses are blocked, they cant smell, and when they cant smell, they wont eat.

stop switching foods around! that's not going to help! stick to ONE GOOD brand (Iams or Science Diet) and get her to the doctor NOW for a FELV/FIV test and fecal exam, and possibly some antibiotics like Biomox and a decongestant like Guafenesin/Dextromethorphan or Chlopheniramine.

When she can smell, she will eat.

Hope this helps, e-mail me if you want.

p.s - i dont where that other guy got that answer, but there is no way your cat is pregnant, feline estrus doesn't occur until 8-9 months of age.

I had 4 kittens weaned a bit too early and my vet suggested goat's milk (no cow's milk please). You should be able to buy it at any grocery store. Bring a small amount to room temp. You may have to use a dropper to feed. Call your vet asap as they may have a better suggestion. I highly recommend a cat only vet. Hope things turn out okay. Good Luck and God Bless you for being a foster kitty parent.

It sounds like she might not be able to smell the food. Something could be wrong with nasal passages and best bet would be to get her to a vet asap. It could also be an illness like parasite or something. Best bet is a vet and testing, but sadly will be costly.

Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try you might not be able to do it. I wish you the best of luck and hope bottom link might help.

try some baby formula, for now it will give her all the nutrition and vitamins she needs until you can get her to eat food again. Good Luck!

there is a vitamin gel that you can rub on her nose that she'll lick to keep her nutrients up until you can figure out why she's lost her appetite. GL

Try rubbing it's belly to stimulate the desire to eat.
Also try bottle feeding. (MILK)

You already know this isn't good. Please, please get her back to the vet. It could be something as simple as her collar is too tight (if she has one) or it could be something worse. Please get her looked at again.
