The heart is a large muscle and if it has to work harder such is the case with high blood pressure, the left ventricle which is the main pump gets larger.this actually causes it to be less effective
once it reaches a certain size. This does not necessarily mean the person will have to have a transplant ,there are medications that will help. There are other reasons people get(cardiomegaly)enlarged heart but this is what most people are talking about when they use the term enlarged heart.

A lot of things can cause one to have an enlarged heart. This can be managed medically with medication and heart transplant but is limited by donor heart supply, u need extensive counselling about the procedure and survival after the procedure. People on medication also do well.

An enlarged heart happens when the heart is over worked and in order to compensate for the work overload enlarges. In this condition the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's need

An enlarged heart (also known as a cardiomegaly) is not a condition in itself, but a symptom of an underlying problem that is causing the heart to work harder than normal.
The range of underlying problems falls into two main categories: pathological (linked to actual disease of the heart muscle) and physiological (linked to other causes which are overworking the heart muscle, such as high blood pressure or thyroid diseases).
Older people are usually at increased risk.

your heart is just like any other muscle in your body, when it works harder it gets bigger. this can happen for many reasons, for example it can be because there is a weakness in your heart or because you have high blood pressure. It doesn't necessarily mean you are going to have to have a heart transplant. There is medication you can take for most conditions that cause it.

It means that the heart is to large for the body and is constricted in its space as a result.
