yes it can, you can do that in the meantime, if you are alone and waiting for the paramedics.

Absolutely not!!! I was under the same belief...and I do have a bad heart.Heart attack at 29! There was a special on T.V. last week that proved this Old Wives Tale is completely untrue! Another example of how people will believe anything. As for the person that said this was true...you could seriously get someone to believe this.If anything, during a heart attack you already have an irregular heart beat and coughing could disrupt it just enough to make it stop beating altogether.Believe me, I learned the hard way! I am very glad to be alive today to set the myth straight!

It is indeed true.

The hard coughing acts sort of like Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). It stimulates the heartbeat which could be weakening or starting to flutter from the heart attack.

Obviously, hard coughing isn't an alternative to going to the hospital, but it "may" delay serious symptoms while you are getting there. So it is certainly worth trying if you are in such a situation.

[yes it can help, but usually won't]

A heart attack is a lay term for acute myocardial infartion (severe and sudden blockage of an artery supplying blood to the heart). Death in heart attack is usually the result of a disruption of normal electrical activity in the heart most notably ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. Coughing will not help with the blockage of the artery, nor will it get your heart out of either of these lethal cardiac rhythms (but an automatic defibrillator certainly can).
Coughing may help get your heart out of some other dangerous/abnormal cardiac rhythms that can accompany (although less often) heart attacks. Supraventricular tachycardias (atrial tach, junctional tach) can be converted to sinus by vagul manuevers (so called because they stimulate the vagus nerve, which has a slowing effect on the heart). Hard coughing is one such vagal manuever.

ummmm NO...........many things happen during a myocardial infarction...but basically is part of the hearts muscle dying because its lacking oxygen...and during this the heart is more susceptible to a deadly arrhythmia ...and delaying medical treatment while this is happening can be a death sentance...and another reason that an MI is happening is because part of a clot in the the hearts arteries broke loose and clotted elsewhere in the heart...you do a bunch of coughing and you could loosen this clot and send it and others into a section of the heart where it shouldnt be...now youve cause cardiac arrest because you denied the heart more oxygen....

I'd rather take aspirin than count on remembering to cough at the right time! If you are at risk for heart attack, follow your doctors advice. It is kind of hard to cough hard when you are unconscious.

NO. Coughing can be a symptom of a heart attack. Unless you plan to die, CALL 911!
