Friends in their 40s are getting married this weekend. They were high school sweethearts but tragically married others and have been through several divorces each. They don't need anything financially. Life in California is good, with all of the good wine, gardens, etc. you can imagine. What do you think would be the gift for such a happy occasion ... this is the marriage they both admit they should have done 25 years ago. Their pride and stupidity got in the way ... no longer.

Thanks for the help. I ended up giving something old and something new, but nothing borrowed or blue. I pulled a 1997 cab from my wine cellar and a new bottle of Vive Cliquot. Very lovely wedding last night.

I like the idea of a picnic basket with a bottle of wine and the glasses. They obviously are combining two households which means things for the house are out. I would either do a pair of nice silver or crystal candlesticks, silver or crystal photo frame or a certificate for cooking classes, a couple massage (pretty much something they can do together).

You can get them gift cards to Target or Walmart. This way they can buy whatever they need/want. Or a gift card to Olive Garden so the couple can eat out whenever they don't feel like cooking. You can buy discounted gift cards on eBay, but hurry they sell fast!

My husband and I were "individually established" before we were married... the most appreciated gifts were dining certs. We both worked, so dining out was welcome any night.
